Back Row Cleft to rightj Mr Cochrane Haskell Rowse Ruez G Wells Esrabrook Winsor Center Row Cleft to rxghtj Henschel Wardrop Baker Durphey Frazer Decker Otto Chapin Catlin Frrst Row Cleft to rrghtj Fawcett Morrow G Brown Daniel Weiss Beck Cookman Taylor Front Row Cleft to rrghtj Davrd Bogmo Smith Strllgebauer THE 1959 FOOTBALL SEASON The 1959 football season was plagued by injuries and dtsapporntmenrs From a spectator s point of view the team met with utter defeat But no one will deny that each game was a hard fought struggle all the way sense of personal satrsfactron When the team first assembled in September there were many positions open because of the large number of graduating seniors which had comprised the pre vrous team Though Avon had but three games sched uled the team immediately began strenuous practrce sessions Coach Cochrane was taking no chances on the phystcal and mental condition of his boys durmg the course of the season Be that as it may the lrne and backfield had to be almost completely rebuilt The key men in the new line were Porter Danrel and Mike Fawcett returnmg lettermen In the backfield the only letterman to return was Mike Cunningham However boys up from the yunror varsity ranks and new boys added the much needed support Among these were Brooks David Murphy and Smith Monson was our first opponent In the prevrous years encounter Avon lost to an excellent Monson eleven by four touchdowns Needless to say this year s team went into the game wxth the singular purpose of avengmg this decisive loss The eager Avon team staged a great fight and during the first half it appeared as if the game were won The offense was clickmg hke clockwork Halfway through the first period Quarter back B111 David scored for Avon on a sweeping end run to the right Andy Murphy contributed a key block 1 , , , , , , , ' , ' I . , . , . , . . . . y . on the play Before the period ended Monson moved the ball down the field to t1e the game at 7 7 During the second period Andy Murphy moved from the full back slot through the center of the Monson lme bull mg his way to a score The half ended wrth the score in our favor by a 14 7 margin In the second half Avon got its first taste of a team that wouldnt give up The Monson team repeatedly fought its way down the field rolling up two vital touchdowns Avon fatled to tally durmg the second half and thus lost a heart breaking game to Monson Academy 21 14 Parents Weekend was the setting for the Avon Tabor meeting Tabor New England Prep School Champions the year before was expected to provtde strong opposition On a wet and muddy field they overwhelmed the hapless Avon squad Perhaps the lack of reserve strength proved to be the dCC1SlVC fac tor here At any rate Avon suffered its worst defeat in recent years as Tabor piled up a 56 0 score Cranwell was the last game of the season Rlddled by mjurres the team sorely missed the services of Bob Bogrno B111 Davnd and Mike Fawcett who were side lined The game was dlsappomtmg though Corky Cookman and Scott Smith played fine ball Avon dropped its final encounter and closed out the season wrth a record of three losses and no victories But no matter how the season turned out the team has a lot to be proud of The boys have demonstrated ability and though it will involve a lot of hard work they should make Coach Cochrane a wmnmg coach next year 125 . , - Q ' ' 9 , . , . l v ' ' x 9 1 1 a - , . . . . . . . , , . 1 ' ' y , . . .
