951' Frrst Row Cleft to rrghtj Proctor Wrre Boyce Nary Mr Durphy C Reese Wardrop Second Row Qleft to rrghtb L Duff Coffey Durphey Gallo Schravetn R Duff Otto Crawford Thrrd Row fleft to rnghtj Meyer Chew Black Trrmrngham SUGAR BUSH Drrp drrp drrp was the sound of the sap flllmg the buckets whrch the members of the Sugar Bush had hung on the surroundmg maple trees Thus thus or gamzatron began nts seasonal work once agam durmg the wmter months of 1960 Thrngs got off to an ofhc1a1 start on Monday anuary Z5th when Mr Durphy the clubs advlsor called a meetmg of all those students who were mterested 1n jomrng the club Some twenty boys attended the meetmg anxnous and ready to start the oft drfhcult yet always rnterestmg work The hrst rhmg to be attended to was the clearmg of the area around the sugar house and the cuttmg of a great deal of wood Thus wood was to be stacked and dr1ed thus facxlrtatmg the work of next years club As the first warm wrsps of sprung a1r blew through Avons woods many maples were tapped and hung wrth sap buckets Presndent Punch Wardrtnp and Vrce presrdent Ford Reese were always on hand to supervrse thrngs and the new members drd not en counter any serxous drffrcultles rn carryrng out therr chores Durph and hrs assrstants were out almost every day collectrng the sap that was to be bo1led mto syrup In a relatrvely short tame th1ck black smoke was seen emerg1ng from the sugar house and the 1nter1or of thxs structure was Hlled wnth dense whxte steam as the sap and syrup were cleansed of rmpurrtres 1m Boyce found that h1s hrp boots were very use ful rn collectmg sap from the trees rn the swamp and Phll Wrres strong back greatly atded the club also The Duff brothers Larry and Rrck added much to the club s sprrtt wrth therr frxendly smrles and love of the outdoors Mr Durphy s assrstance to new members can not be emphasrzecl too strongly He has lnstructed boys rn the proper methods of syrup makrng smce the club s rnceptron ln 1949 In add1t1on hrs mstructron has al ways been tempered wrrh frrendlrness and krndness WV aa . arg.
