WARDENS J0hr1 Alrd Charles McLaughlin THE COUNCIL Avons charter states that the school is to have a strong student government It has been felt from the begrnnxng that thrs would be excellent tratnrng for young men who were about to enter 1 democratic so crety in which one must understand the responsrbrlntxes and prrvnleges of berng a cttrzen Thus the gox ernment of The Vlllage of Old Farms came mto being ln form tt closely resembles that of our Federal Got ernment wrth all its cntrzens voting rn council electrons These councillors constitute the legtslatrve branch of the gov ernment and they rn turn, appoint the ludrcxal body When the schools admmrstratnon IS consrdered as the execunve member of the team, rt can readily be seen that Avons government rs tr1 partrte The council rs made up of seven members who are elected by their fellows from the ranks of the fifth md varrety of funds, dances, and even a furniture sile' As well, rt passed several new ordrnances concerning the wrnter uniform regulatlon, the question of smoking rn the woods, the clarrfrcatron of the search warrant et al In addition, rt upheld present polrcres concerning room mspectxon meal and study hill supervrsron ind the maintenance of a high sense of discipline ind morale rn the school Other council enattments include grvmg extra prrvrleges to Juoges and to v trsrty pl myers and fine supervrsron of the popular rnter dorm com petrtron Every Sunday evening this group meets and discusses rdeas which its representatives may have on the passage of new laws, student conduct student prrvrleges and the creation of harmony throughout the school The council rs made up of seven oHicers The Warden fthe mayor of the V1lllgC, a Vice Warden fthe mayors lssrstantb 1 Commrssroner of Athletrcs, a Commrs stoner of Grounds 1 Commissioner of Publrc Safety 1 Commrssloner of Publrc Welfare and a Secretary The councillors often extend rnvrtatrons to the student body it l1rge ro attend their meetrngs and drrectly bring up urgent mitters for dxscussron During the course of the school year there are many duties that 1 council member rs obliged to fulfill Fore most among these are that of COUHClllOf of the Day and Councillor of the Weekend both of which entarl no small amount of personal effort and txme Beyond these ttsks many councrl members take tt upon them selves to try to help students with their rndrvidual problems so as to correct the boy s mrstakes and to keep htm from needlessly repeating them Thrs rs perhaps less the most rewlrdmg The Frrst Term Council was composed of Eve senlors and two juniors They were ohn Alrd Cwardenj Chuck McLaughlin fVlC6 wardenj Sandy Alves Steve Merrill Mrke Mlller, Ruth Cluxton and jeff Henschel The Second Term Council saw one senior depart and one junlor added rs contrasted to the legrslatlve body of the first term lts members were Chuck McLaughlin Qvt lrdenj ohn Arrd QVICC wardenj Steve Merrill Mike Miller, Peter Antolmr jeff Henschel and Bud Siegel No smtll amount of credit should be given Mr olmson who as ID the past, assisted ln an advlsory tlpatlty and also informed the councll as to the ad mrnlstranons views on various matters .
