It was afternoon on a day after school, when David Breckner had blown out the classroom speaker by talking all period. Scrooge, needing quiet relief, took Tawil of his old Forde and headed off to Duffy’s Tavern, the local lounge, one of the Towns’ finest. Actually, he had wanted to go far away-England, perhaps, or the Argentine, anywhere exciting that turns up in a Rand-McNally, or someplace where you could hear the Lyons roar, by George - or where you could ride a Kamel across a desert, or Bayreuth, for a good performance of Kristen and Isolde - but the exchequer said, no, so back to reality it was. Scrooge stumbled into the local dive, trying to Pierce the darkness, and wound up in a booth, having ordered a Miller’s. Soon his comely friend in Kellie green slipped into the booth next to him and in a burst of Haw-Hawes the way she usually did at school, said, “Got some good grass, good buddy?” “No,” Scrooge said, “1 don’t. And I left the Roche clip at home anyway. Here, take some quarters and get the jukebox going.” She began stuffing in the quarters and soon, very unusual music began coming out: the works of D’Alessandro Scarlatti, the famous Italian composer, followed by “Laura,” “Lovely Rita, Meter Maid,” by the Beatles, and then “Michelle.” At this point, the first Millers was gone and a second one ordered from proprietor Tom Hayward, whose attention was hard to get because he was absorbed in the latest Rock magazine. Suddenly, over the peaceful buzz of conversation and the murmur of the TV, Scrooge heard a loud “Pam-Pam-Pam” outside. Everyone dashed outside to find a 1947 Frasier backfiring in the parking lot. Billy Camillo, the owner, got out, opened the hood and shouted, “It was tuned up by someone at the Perkins School for the Blind!” Obviously, not enough Curran was getting from the coil to the plugs. “How much didja pay Veradt?” called Jim Lundgren from across the lot. “$5,000,” said Bill. “Great Scott,” called Jim, “Even a Monkey wouldn’t pay that much. Especially when it never had any Power. The School Street Maniacs will make fun of you.” After having to Russell up so much money for the car, Billy was obviously disgusted. They wandered back into the place. Scrooge looked at his Saeki watch. “Wow,” he said to his friend , “Time to eat. Where do you wanna go? McDonalds? Or stay here and have Swanson’s TV Dinners?” They couldn’t decide, so they ordered a few more Millers, awful stuff, really, enough to make one need a Kidney transplant. Scrooge’s 38 “We so lived happily forever, the story goes . . . ” friend was getting a touch under the weather, and he and Hayward had to Walker around to clear her head. “The heck with it,” she said, “1 can’t stand those Swanton TV dinners, but let’s have ’em anyway.” The fact that she didn’t know they were Swanson’s TV dinners attests to the bad beer. “Alicia have to eat.” She was certainly slurring her words. Their conversation stopped when in through the door came the two most prosperous fellows you ever saw - none other than Tom Grenham and Bruce Urbano, looking like Deans at Williams College in Brooks Brothers suits, both seeming very Gallant, and both with the most stunning chicks on their arms. Why they were there, no one could figure out, unless like Billy Camillo, so frustrated with his car, they were there for a Daley snort. Someone muttered that both were Mafiosi, powerful dudes who could raise Cain if they wanted, especially when you looked at their Ripley muscles. Rumor had it they were so rich they had loaned money to the Mexican government, and were getting ready to call in some of those loans. In any case, all the customers watching Perry Mason on the TV turned to stare, since they were classier than anyone else. Then a hush fell over the place, and for some reason, people looked as if they should be Manning battle stations. Was this some sort of Roos, a trick? No way, and no wonder, for who, sitting across the room should heave a Gooey plate of pizza at their sartorial splendor but Jaime Gonzales, Elias El Gran Bandito. Ana, sitting with him, tossed another. The place was in an uproar and resembled a scene from Alice in Wonderland. “Oh, Suzanne-ah,” said Scrooge to his friend, “The pizza’s gonna hit the fan now.” And it did, spraying cheese and tomato all over everyone in sight. “Aha!” cried Jaime. “Even Steven!-Pizza for pesos!” At the other end of the counter, Hayward momentarily put down his rock magazine, made a phone call, and resumed reading. Moments later, in stormed the Police, Lisa Gorman, Nancy DeAngelis, and Lisa Shapiro, brandishing Mace and nightsticks. Throughout all of this, what was comical was that Karen Hovsepian and Cheryl Olsen had been sitting in a corner nibbling on Clarks bars and Smith Brothers coughdrops, playing Patty-cake, oblivious to everything. Still the commotion was going on, the pizza throwing joined by anyone who had one, until Margaret Murphy opened the door to the Issa machine and began to throw cubes at everyone to cool them off. Paul D’Entremont, Chief of Police, then strode through the door, blowing his whistle and yelling “Take these people down to Connolly Road and dump’ em. “Hail Mary, said Scrooge s friend. Now there will be some quiet relaxation.” But what happened after that is unknown, because Scrooge opened his eyes and found himself coming to in the parking lot. 39 A ay..
