THE HISTORY OF 58 The trme was June 1952 the place a drngy office within the walls of a strange looking establrshment fashron ed mysteriously enough after the style of an old fifteenth century Cotswald Village the occasion the first meetmg of a group of highly trained and selective technrcrans and en grneers assembled to begm the development of a top secret project to be completed at latest by june of 1958 The staff of engineers not yet fully accustomed to work mg with each other drd not accomplish a great deal of work over the summer but by September of that year the founda tron upon which to build and expand had been constructed This basic skeleton consisted of five necessary mam parts each supporting the others yet specralrzxng rn a smgle aspect of the functronrng of the mstrument These parts lrsted in alphabetical order would sound somethmg like this Fuesse nrch Keller Mogmelnrckr Neher and Tilley It 15 easrly seen that the code names of these parts were so devised to make it impossible to gam any information as to the use of the part rtself from merely hearing the word mentioned thus the necessrty of the following explanation The first part the Fuessenrch was assigned to the very special job of seemg to rt that all of the other parts were functronmg properly Its job was later to fall under a category called Student Council but this rs of little importance at present The purpose of the second part the Keller was the very rm portant one of brrdgmg the gap between the project and the outside world servmg rn the capacity of what may be termed a communication system It has been rumored how ever that rather than usmg wires or radro waves to commu mcate mformatron and ideas the system actually shuttled back and forth at supersonic speeds between the project and the home base The thrrd system of the project was to begm the mstallment of a strange soundmg part called a Mog nrelnrckr It was the task of this portion of the projects mechanism to make all the necessary calculatrons whrle the rnstrument was to be rn operation This section like the first was one soon to be enlarged The last two parts the Tnlley and the Neher were con structed wrth much care and concern so as to be perfectly compatible throughout the entrrety of the instruments operanon with little rf any frrctxon coming between the two This sectxon of the project was m complete control of the grounds and surroundrngs of the base That wrnter the group of technxclans drsbanded some what to work on mdrvrdual research projects None the less the data received about the operatronal tests on the systems were carefully gone over wrth a fine tooth comb and rn nearly every case there was a general nodding of approval among the group of planners The next two years called for fervent frenzied work on the part of the screntrsts Each of the formerly mentioned systems was mcreased to some extent and several new ones were added to the project The most notrceable of these additions was perhaps one called the Martrn Mrtchell This part along wrth the Berglund was quick to be recognrzed as a future portion of the aforementioned Student Councrl At this time rt was rumored that this system would be ready for prelrmmary operatlon by September of 1957 The communrcatrons system was also mcreased by the addrtron of one ponderous Stanley Strouch as was the system concerned with grounds by a thmg called the Brshop Two important new developments were added at this time to the already srzeable lrst In the first place a group of instruments concerned with what was named the social system of the project was mstrtuted with the appearance of two technical innovations straight off the drawing board named the Nugent and the Chambers These strange looking thrngs were soon to be added to and be classrfred under the collectrve name of the Gold Key By this time the word was out that the project under constructlon was to be some sort of a super sonrc mrssrle and thus conjectures over the kmd of fuel to be used were preva lent judging from the length of trme that the project had been m construction rt seemed obvious that the propellant was not to be an ordinary one After much fervent searchrng and scroungmg by newspaper reporters rt was finally drs called muscle After much more drlrgent searching this m1x ture was found to be made up of a combination of strange soundmg chemicals Donnelly Campagna Marsh Bokhof Porter and Kellam most of which were mrxed and propor txoned rn a formidable machine called the coach Wrthrn a year this list was to include a few more hrghly specralrzed substances under the names of Ferrrer Phelps McBride and Tracy By the fall of 1957 a shelf of rare chemicals had been so well arranged and worked over that during the autumn months of that final year the fuel fired almost perfectly throughout the testmg season Durmg the last two years the final touches were added to the systems The newly developed calculatrng devrce called the Barry was added to the mstrumentatron section as was the equally new and hard workmg development the Lash The communrcatrons system was also expanded rn makmg ready for the yet secret journey The Kolodney the Conlon and the Marsh all were desrgned for th1s purpose alone At last the long antrcrpated day of firmg approached there was a final scurry of actrvrty and the towering rocket powered missile was at last unveiled to the general public Each day weather conditions were carefully scrutmrzed and finally near mrdday of June 5 1958 the final Word was given and the great rocket thundered upward on a four year tour of Yale Georgetown Prmceton Washington and Lee Cornell Wrllrams Harvard and numerous other far off planets 9 l a h Q D I D ' , 3 .
