TRACK SEASON March was a pleasant month for most of Avon's track enthusiasts, as it was with the final organization of the 158 track team that promise was shown of a most successful season. A veritable drove of last year's lettermen had returned, and these, along with the new additions, showed that the team's runners were in tip- top shape. Of these new-comers, Bill Powers and Kim Wilson proved that they were equally as capable running the mile as they had been on the cross-country course. Following Bill and Kim down from the gruelling two and one half miles around Beaver Pond was Billy Em- rich, who, along with juniors Rolf Olson, Pete Ramsey, Bill Welch and Senior Xandy Carter, helped to fill adequately the 440 spot. Dick Taylor, Jordy Mott and Doug Marshall did the same for the sprinting places, and Andy Warner, Enrique Garces and Billy Welch tackled the half mile. Senior Jordy Mott tussled with his old record of 22.8 seconds in the 220-yard run, and Bill Welch, Rolf Olson and Bill Tracy fought to pro- duce as fine results in the 880-yard relay. The hurdles this year were crossed mainly by Bill Tracy and Doug Marshallg first-term Warden, Luke Kellam, did most of the team's pole vaulting, and joe Thompson and Porter Daniel vied for the position of high jumper. This year, in contrast to last, it was the field events which proved to be the team's weakest spot. Stepping up to the shotput were Chuck Davis and Xandy Carter, supported by judge Porter, Dick Bokhof, Gerry Gaudette and Bob Ferrier, while flinging the javelin were Sandy Phelps, Bill Welch and Langdon Brown. Throwing the discus were Bill Tracy, Chuck Davis and Xandy Carter. Anticipating the future, it may be stated with reasonable confidence that track will have little dilli- culty in the next few years. Many of the runners and jumpers are underclassmen. With Coach Efir1ger's careful handling, Avon can certainly look forward to several more successful track seasons. fd...-
