with nearly half the starting line-up absent. The Avon eleven was defeated three to one. A few days later, the soccer team faced a strong Williston team. This game showed Avon's potential for being a good soccer team, as the Avonians real- ized that they had to show an aggressive spirit on the field to win. This contest was closely fought, but resulted in a loss for Avon. Avon faced Wilbraham in the next game, scoring two goals in the first half. One was scored by Fer- nando Herrera on a penalty kick, and the other by Dick Williams. Wilbraham scored in the third per- iod. In the fourth period, the ball skidded off Sellon's shin guard into the Avon net, for a true gift. The rest of the game plus two overtime periods was a great defensive battle, but neither team scored. In a hard game against Lenox, Avon ended with a three to two win. Midway through the first period, Williams passed to Waddy, who banged one into the net. Lenox scored on a penalty kick and a corner kick to take a slight edge at halftime In the second half Waddy passed to Nelson and this tricky footed youngster booted another tally for Avon Late in the fourth period Avons Fernando Herrera lofted a penalty kick into the net The game against Suffield ended in a one to one deadlock. Midway through the second period, Dun Waddy received a pass from Matt Tierney at the half- lield mark and raced toward the Suffield goal, passing it off to Williams who booted it in. After that, Avon's defense was discombobulated except for goalie, Bill Donnelly, who stopped many potential Suffield goals. Late in the second period, however, Smith of Sulheld booted one to tie the score. Neither team scored during the rest of the contest. The next game was against Watkinson. The scor- ing for Avon was done by Xandy Carter who smashed through two goals in the first five minutes, but Wat- kinson came back to score twice in the next ten. In the last twenty seconds, Piper of Watkinson broke through Avon's defense for a goal. Luck wasn't with Avon. The final game of the season was against Monson. Avon's high-scoring Xandy Carter led off with a quick goal, but the team suddenly fell apart and had it not been the continual hustle of John Ruddy, Monson would have scored Late in the fourth quar ter Dun Waddy catapulted a corner kick and Andy Warner booted the ball into the goal to end the game Avon Old Farms soccer team ended the season with three wins two ties and five losses 9 .
