Left to right VanDeWater Vrerlng G Mr Smart Davis D Loring Keleher SAILING TEAM The Interscholastic Yacht Racing Association holds its races every spring at the Coast Guard Academy in New London Connecticut A maxtmum of twenty crews representing schools from all of New England may enter Avon was admitted to the association m 1956 thanks to the efforts of our faculty advisor Mr Smart centerboard sloops of the Raven Class, equlpped with dacron sails The crews arc divided into three dlvlslons after elimination races the three top crews from each drvrston compete in finals The entrre meet usually takes from two to three days to complete Scotty Wehrung was our first skipper rn the twenty first regatta his crew was composed of Warren Viering Mike Dow and jep Smith Because Avons crew had never sailed together before the races they did not reach the finals ln the tvs enty second regatta the Axon crew who were skippered by Warren Vrer mg made a spectacular start rn the second race 1ead1ng thc entire fleet on the port tack however they were unable to hold thls positron and did not finish as im presslvely as they had started Again Avon did not V1er1ng Vlctor V1er1ng and Dave Dav1s At the close of the meet Mr Smart was elected to the Executive Committee of the Assoc1at1on Great hopes are held for this xears meet because of the return of two previous New London racers Dave Davis and George Viering who will be ably assisted by Cole VanDeWater and two Bostonrans Chuck Loring and Mike Keleher who is Frrefly Champion 7 v V ' 5 y D hi ' v - , v ' . . 3 7 7 h Q X 7 - ' Q s . , . - . .
