4' First row left to rtght Davis C Phelps Campagna Mott Dew Seidel Clark Camp Croft Tosi Tracy N Rozmsky Law Second row left to right Davenport Schlein Betley Howe Bishop Fisher Bradley Marshall Kincaid Kellam Thompson Gallo Antolmi Hathaway Motter Third rovu left to right Strouch Finlayson Turner VanDeWatcr Nielsen Phillips Olson Erskine P Tracy W King Cunningham Blakeley Chace Van Winkle Dodd Heathman Carter Conlon CLEE CLUB The 1957 58 Avon Old Farms Glee Club under had an extremely successful season highlighted by four concerts each containing an array of well selected tunes Luke Kellam President and Dave Hathaway Co president paved the way for the group of singers doing a wonderful job in seeing that the concerts ran smoothly Stanley Strouch played the accornpani ments for the club at the public appearances The group as a whole did a remarkable job during its Thursday afternoon practice sessions and was warmly rewarded for its hard work by being en thusrastically greeted wherever it sang The repertoire was composed of a bizarre assortment of songs rang mg from jingle Bells Today there is Ringing and See that Babe in the Lowly Manger to the more dif ficult selections from Handels Messiah Last December 7 our first concert was held with Fox Hollow School The combmed clubs sang an as sortment of songs as well as selections offered by each glee club individually To top off an already success touches to an evening of merriment The next social engagement on the agenda was on March l at Northampton School for Girls Such zany numbers as The Musical Trust and The Pope mixed with more somber selections from The Mes srah added to the warm welcome the club received The dancing after the concert made the event a high ly enjoyable one On April 27 the Glee Club again took part in the anticipated Spring Choral Festival at the Bushnell Memorial This was the highlight of our singing year Twelve of the independent prep schools for boys or girls in this area pomtly sang The Messiah before an enthusiastic audience This more than any other event of the season gave us the greatest satisfaction We concluded a successful season with a final con cert at the Prospect Hill School for Girls in New Haven glib? - 7 U I l 1 3 7 Y I ' V9 the excellent direction of Mr. Jack Sunshine Grove, ful concert, the Avon Heirs added delightful finishing , . y - . Left to right VanDeWater Vrerlng G Mr Smart Davis D Loring Keleher SAILING TEAM The Interscholastic Yacht Racing Association holds its races every spring at the Coast Guard Academy in New London Connecticut A maxtmum of twenty crews representing schools from all of New England may enter Avon was admitted to the association m 1956 thanks to the efforts of our faculty advisor Mr Smart centerboard sloops of the Raven Class, equlpped with dacron sails The crews arc divided into three dlvlslons after elimination races the three top crews from each drvrston compete in finals The entrre meet usually takes from two to three days to complete Scotty Wehrung was our first skipper rn the twenty first regatta his crew was composed of Warren Viering Mike Dow and jep Smith Because Avons crew had never sailed together before the races they did not reach the finals ln the tvs enty second regatta the Axon crew who were skippered by Warren Vrer mg made a spectacular start rn the second race 1ead1ng thc entire fleet on the port tack however they were unable to hold thls positron and did not finish as im presslvely as they had started Again Avon did not V1er1ng Vlctor V1er1ng and Dave Dav1s At the close of the meet Mr Smart was elected to the Executive Committee of the Assoc1at1on Great hopes are held for this xears meet because of the return of two previous New London racers Dave Davis and George Viering who will be ably assisted by Cole VanDeWater and two Bostonrans Chuck Loring and Mike Keleher who is Frrefly Champion 7 v V ' 5 y D hi ' v - , v ' . . 3 7 7 h Q X 7 - ' Q s . , . - . .
