' Left to right Wrlson Kohn Mlller Mr Durphey Neher Van Ness Whlrman Nelson Cranford Wardrop Duff Dodd SUGAR BUSH When wrnter approaches :ts end and sprmg begms to appear buckets can lnvarxably be seen hangmg on maple trees all over the school property as Sugar Bush gets under way In the afternoons drlrent boys keep the wood prles stacked hrgh and one or two keep a blazrng fire golng around the clock under the pan and take the syrup off as lf bolls down Others make the rounds on the truck wrth Mr Durphey gatherrng the sa The club 15 unusual m that lf IS the only one of its kmd rn the Hartford area The real maple syrup rn dustrres are further north 1n Vermont and New Hamp shrre and some rn the western part of Pennsylvanra The club from txme to trme has recelvecl recognrtron from the Hartford papers and rrghtfully so Its pro duct IS superlor Frank Neher the club Presrclent spent many hours this year ln the afternoon and late at mght Contrlbut mg much to the club Thrs rs not all rt takes however frosty mghts and warm sprmg afternoons are neces sary for a fast flow of sap Thls year the season started but weeks later than last year whrch was con sldered slow Because of the late start and lrmrted number of expernenced members thxs year s total gal lons of syrup fell a lrttle short of last year s The ex penence and ab1l1ty of Chamberlain and Zarefoss were greatly mnssecl The club needless to say couldn t have functnoned without the constant help and understandmg of Mr Durphey who sacrrlicecl hrs tune to help tend the fire before the boys came down He helped close up at mght and take the syrup to h1s house to be canned and sealed He taught us to work together and rnstrlled responslbnlrty rn the older boys Although some events mav be forgotten the senxor members of Sugar Bush wtll never forget Durphs kmdness V uv -4.- 1 l . Seated left to nght Thompson Otto Crawford Seconl row left to rrqht Wrllrams Trlles Kohn Brown L Van Ness Mrller Mr Durphey Wardrop Standrng left to rrght Wrlson lNehtr Futs semch Mogxelnrckr NIMROD CLUB Thls year marked the eleventh annrversary of the Nrmrod Clubs exrstence rn the New School Wrth the advent of the new year came many new prospects some brg and others not so blg but each held a srgnxfx cant spot rn the ever growmg hrstory of the club Last sprrng the membershrp assumed the some what trymg prolect of addrng a new addrtron to 1ts famrlrar log cabm The proposed extension was to be as brg as the exrstrng cabm Although the plan lay unfullfilled dur1ng the summer months xt was picked up agam ln the fall wrth much fervor and excuement No trme was wasted rn shmgllng the roof and puttlng up the srdmg whrch by the way had to be relreved of 1ts bark coverrng rn order to postpone the termrte rnva slon as long as possxble In lrne wrth nts tradrtton and purpose the club put lts stream and other hatcherxes m workmg order and stocked them wrth about a thousand trout The fall of thrs year was further hnghlxghted by Sunday trap shoots at the clubs skeet range Under the watchful supervrsron of Mrke Mrller and Barney Beall th1s sport afforded many pleasurable hours to all comets As wmter settled rn the Senrors rn the club started to renovate the old chxcken coop for use as an rndoor rlfle range When rt rs finrshed the club wlll open If to members of the student body whose rnterests l1e 10 the use of firearms The club plans to reyuvenate the sprmgs and streams ln the near future thus allowmg for good frsh mg rn most spots As most of the streams have been stocked regularly for the last few seasons no new fish wlll be added to the somewhat obscure ponds on the property The club opened nts huntlng season w1th twenty flve new pheasants added to the wrldllfe already at large Thrs was done solely out of club funds rn con trast wrth past years when the club was fortunate enough to obtam at least a dozen brrds from the Dog Tr1als now drscontmued at the school One of the more trag1c rncrdents ln club l1fe was the death of Verne Prlest Verne had been Mrs Rrd dle s chref logger and woodsman He of course cut all the wood whlch s to be found rn school and bu1lt out of oak logs the older sectlon of the present Nrmrod Cabxn It W1ll be many years before hrs achlevements are lost rn the sands of trme The club opened thls year under the drrectron of Cleve Fuessenxch Presldent assrsted by Frank Neher Vlce presxdent who succeeded h1m as Presrdent dur mg the second term oe Thompson retarned the ofhce of Secretary for both terms whrle the office of Treas urer went from Marty Mrtchell to Mlke Mrller Wlth the electron of Punch Wardrop to the club we ob tanned a skrlled projectlonlst to manage our regular Wednesday mght movies whlch lnclude a wlde varrety of out door toprcs and as goes wlthout sayrng Coach s canoe trrp rnto the wrlds of Marne The club has a wrde range of plans for the future and wzth a lot of support from out door enthusiasts If wrll remarn the most rndependent and well organrzed club ln school r 3 U - . 4' First row left to rtght Davis C Phelps Campagna Mott Dew Seidel Clark Camp Croft Tosi Tracy N Rozmsky Law Second row left to right Davenport Schlein Betley Howe Bishop Fisher Bradley Marshall Kincaid Kellam Thompson Gallo Antolmi Hathaway Motter Third rovu left to right Strouch Finlayson Turner VanDeWatcr Nielsen Phillips Olson Erskine P Tracy W King Cunningham Blakeley Chace Van Winkle Dodd Heathman Carter Conlon CLEE CLUB The 1957 58 Avon Old Farms Glee Club under had an extremely successful season highlighted by four concerts each containing an array of well selected tunes Luke Kellam President and Dave Hathaway Co president paved the way for the group of singers doing a wonderful job in seeing that the concerts ran smoothly Stanley Strouch played the accornpani ments for the club at the public appearances The group as a whole did a remarkable job during its Thursday afternoon practice sessions and was warmly rewarded for its hard work by being en thusrastically greeted wherever it sang The repertoire was composed of a bizarre assortment of songs rang mg from jingle Bells Today there is Ringing and See that Babe in the Lowly Manger to the more dif ficult selections from Handels Messiah Last December 7 our first concert was held with Fox Hollow School The combmed clubs sang an as sortment of songs as well as selections offered by each glee club individually To top off an already success touches to an evening of merriment The next social engagement on the agenda was on March l at Northampton School for Girls Such zany numbers as The Musical Trust and The Pope mixed with more somber selections from The Mes srah added to the warm welcome the club received The dancing after the concert made the event a high ly enjoyable one On April 27 the Glee Club again took part in the anticipated Spring Choral Festival at the Bushnell Memorial This was the highlight of our singing year Twelve of the independent prep schools for boys or girls in this area pomtly sang The Messiah before an enthusiastic audience This more than any other event of the season gave us the greatest satisfaction We concluded a successful season with a final con cert at the Prospect Hill School for Girls in New Haven glib? - 7 U I l 1 3 7 Y I ' V9 the excellent direction of Mr. Jack Sunshine Grove, ful concert, the Avon Heirs added delightful finishing , . y - .
