DEDICATION CARL W. THOMPSON We, the Class of 1961, are proud to dedicate our yearbook to one who has guided our efforts for the past three years. Because his judgement while sometimes rigid, is always just and tempered with humor, we hereby salute our Vice-Principal, Mr. Carl Thompson. 3

During our years at A.C.S., we have had many experiences which we now look back upon with fond remembrance and often times amusements. In this annual we have tried to recapture some of those humorous, as well as ser- ious, moments and events. We, the class of ’61, invite you to share these moments and memor- ies with us as we proudly present the 1961 AVOCAN. The Senior Class of Avoca Central School Is Proud to Present THE 1961 AVOCAN

IN APPRECIATION EDWARD M. BLAKE Edward M. Blake came to Avoca as principal of Avoca Union Free School, District 2, in 1933. Three years later, in 1936, he became super- vising principal of the Avoca Central School which was formed at that time. Our present building was constructed in 1938. In 1950 the bus garage was added to the school plant. Due to careful planning this addition was made from funds on hand. Four more classrooms were added and the cafeteria enlarged in 1952 to take care of increased en- rollment. In 1956 the auditorium, music and art studios, business edu- cation classroom and men teachers' room were added. All of these improvements to the school’s physical aspect have evolved under Mr. Blake’s careful supervision. All this he accomplished in addition to his many other administrative duties concerning the guidance of students and the improvement of the curriculum. Mr. Blake holds degrees from Syracuse and Cornell Universities. He is an elder in the Avoca Presbyterian Church, a past master of the Avoca Masons and an active member of the Lion’s Club. He has always taken an interest in civic affairs and most particularly in those which were designed to improve the welfare of the youth or the community and the country. The class of 1961 and the AVOCAN staff are grateful for this opportunity to express the appreciation of the students, past and present, for all of the hard work and foresighted stewardship which Mr. Blake has devoted to Avoca Central School during the last three decades.
