THE AVOCAN CLASS FLOWER: White Rose CLASS COLORS: Blue and White CLASS MOTTO Knowledge is the treasure, but practice is the key to it. During our years at A.C.S., we have had many experiences which we now look back upon with fond remembrance and often times amusements. In this annual we have tried to recapture some of those humorous, as well as ser- ious, moments and events. We, the class of ’61, invite you to share these moments and memor- ies with us as we proudly present the 1961 AVOCAN. The Senior Class of Avoca Central School Is Proud to Present THE 1961 AVOCAN DEDICATION CARL W. THOMPSON We, the Class of 1961, are proud to dedicate our yearbook to one who has guided our efforts for the past three years. Because his judgement while sometimes rigid, is always just and tempered with humor, we hereby salute our Vice-Principal, Mr. Carl Thompson. 3 IN APPRECIATION EDWARD M. BLAKE Edward M. Blake came to Avoca as principal of Avoca Union Free School, District 2, in 1933. Three years later, in 1936, he became super- vising principal of the Avoca Central School which was formed at that time. Our present building was constructed in 1938. In 1950 the bus garage was added to the school plant. Due to careful planning this addition was made from funds on hand. Four more classrooms were added and the cafeteria enlarged in 1952 to take care of increased en- rollment. In 1956 the auditorium, music and art studios, business edu- cation classroom and men teachers' room were added. All of these improvements to the school’s physical aspect have evolved under Mr. Blake’s careful supervision. All this he accomplished in addition to his many other administrative duties concerning the guidance of students and the improvement of the curriculum. Mr. Blake holds degrees from Syracuse and Cornell Universities. He is an elder in the Avoca Presbyterian Church, a past master of the Avoca Masons and an active member of the Lion’s Club. He has always taken an interest in civic affairs and most particularly in those which were designed to improve the welfare of the youth or the community and the country. The class of 1961 and the AVOCAN staff are grateful for this opportunity to express the appreciation of the students, past and present, for all of the hard work and foresighted stewardship which Mr. Blake has devoted to Avoca Central School during the last three decades. ARINCIE JOHNSON The Class of ’61 has been proud to recognize Arincie Johnson as a member of the class for a short time each of our high school years. May the best of luck, success and happiness be found in her future. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Well, we are finally seniors and our year has had a busy start. During our summer vacation, we visited many business concerns throughout the county obtaining ads for our yearbook. Then the first week of school we began our magazine campaign. At the end of two weeks we found that Anna Mae’s team was oversold by Chuck’s by only fifteen dollars. Top sales- men were as follows: Joy Sutfin, Margaret Coots, David Peck, and James Reynolds. All of us have worked very hard to make each of the projects successful. Next we started practicing for our play, THE THREAD THAT RUNS SO TRUE, an adaptation from Jesse Stuart’s book. Clifford Edwards played the leading role of Jesse Stuart and surely did a great job. It was held on the nights of November fourth and fifth and was an experience none of us will ever forget. We, also, began working on the first edition of the Acova which came out on October fifth. Nearly all the seniors helped. Clifford Edwards, our editor, made this school paper better than all expectations. And now that we are on our way in our senior year, we can settle down to make our yearbook a promising one. Walter Badeau is our editor and so far it looks great. Margaret Coots and Lois McDaniel were chosen captains for the gold and maroon teams respectively. In February we plan to have the senior dance. It can’t help but be a success if all our class works with as much enthusiasm as they have these first few weeks. To lead us this year we have elected Charles Hewson, president; Anna Mae Burton, vice-president; Priscilla Adair, secretary; Lois McDaniel, treasurer; and James Reynolds, student council representative. They are all doing their part to make 'this year our biggest and best. Again this year Mr. Niver and Mr. Warner are our advisors and are helping and guiding us toward a successful year. We all want to wish the best of success to Arincie Johnson who has been with us the first few months of each high school year. She is a sweet girl and has been an inspiration to all of us. We hope that the succeeding classes will enjoy the success and learning which we have enjoyed in our high school years at Avoca, our Alma Mater.” 19 MOST ALL-AROUND W. Badeau, J. JUNIORS In September, 1958, the class of 1962 started its high school life by electing Andrew Pierce as president, Earl Shaut as vice president, Carolie MacBride as secretary and'John Murphy as treasurer and Mary Etta Lyke as student council representative. Our fall calendar campaign was our first money making project and encouraged us with its success. Our team captains were Lynn Ackley and Kay Partridge. Kay’s team lost and paid the'penalty of furnishing refreshments for a class picnic at Hees Memorial Park. This was enjoyed by everyone. Our second project was our “May Day” dance on May first. Our decorating committee was headed by Bonnie Julien and the results were very pleasing. We began our sophomore year by reelecting the same people to the offices of president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. Bonnie Julien was our student council representative. November 13, was the date of our second class dance. The theme was “Superstition Social” and the decorating committee was headed by Elaine Fults. We all enjoyed a fall picnic at Bonnie Julien’s home. A highlight of our Sophomore year was the student council election. For the office of vice-president, we nominated Lynn Ackley and Carolie MacBride. Lynn emerged victor after an exciting campaign. We see promises and challenges in our Junior year. We elected Lynn Ackley as president, Andy Pierce as vice president, Carolie MacBride as secretary, John Murphy as treasurer again, and Bonnie Julien as student council representative. Our dance is on September 30 and posters sport the theme “School Daze.” This year Kay Partridge heads the decorating committee and this project promises to be successful. We are all looking forward to getting our rings in October. 24 ROW ONE: Mrs. Many, J. Lysyczyn, S. C. Rep.; H. Johnson, A. A. Rep.;D. Flynn, R. Deaver, G. Davis, R. Hamilton, Miss DiRienzo. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is an organization made up of one elected representative from each homeroom, a representative from each chartered club, and all presidents of each class from grades seven through twelve. The members work together with their advisor, Mr. Bakeman, to promote friendly relations throughout the junior and senior high school. Last year, for the first time, elections were held in June. The president is chosen from the senior class and the vice-president from the junior class. The officers are as follows: President, Bernadine Jones; Vice-President, Lynn Ackley; Treasurer, Anna Mae Burton; and Secretary, Carolie MacBride. This year the Student Council has plans to encourage a foreign student exchange program. This being a major concern of the body, it also plans to initiate several other new plans to make the student government more active in fulfilling the desires of the student government body. 38 SEATED: Mr. Niver, B.
