Virgtnia Walker seems to like baking pretty well I see she is working at All Wright Pastry Shop Betty Marie Cox seems to like servicemen She has married a Lt Colonel Frances McR1ght is now editor of the Birmingham news She rs happily married also Iudy Isley seems to like the small town of Moulton Heights She has made her home there Charles Lamon is now manager of the Huntsville Arsenal The warning hum of my winged friend brought me out of this pleasant reminiscing He had quietly waited fsharpening his claws no doubtj wlule the faces of each of my classmates has surged through my memory But wait' I believe there is one missing from this hall of fame Who can it be? There were thirteen boys ani twenty three girls who swarmed together that year' Who is the one not accounted for? self against the screen in an effort to get Olll Hrs eyes seemed to be irresistibly drawn to some obJect rn the yard Looking closer I saw the attraction' Humming flitting and turning flips in mid air Just out side the door was the ueatest little girl hornet ever your eyes did see She was uumistakably inviting my little pal to come out and play Like a flash I remembered the missing classmate Bernice Patterson' She and Buddy used to have something of the same look in their eyes as they strolled down the hall to gether just tlunk that happy couple is now living on a small farm raising little Pattersons I opened the door and released the merry hornet to go to its mate and wrth it went the memories of that other hornet s nest memories of those happy years spent at Ausunvrlle High School Class Prophet, Marie Lane A buzz from my friend brought my attention back to him, The little fellow had literally flattened him-

If there lS anything more ahve and threatening than a hornet s nest it s a bigger hornet s nest The one I accidentally stirred up was of the bigger variety and was densely populated Each lrttle hornet that drve bombed toward me seemed more determrned than the last to frnd for hrs midday snack a rrchluicy bite of nose eyelid ankle calf knee or Ouch' Slapprngand swatung I made a desperate and undignrfied dash for cover' I puffed and panted the last few feet across the yard sprinted up the steps and managed to slam the screen door rn the very teeth of the swarm Wrth considerable alarm l notrced that one persistent little monster must have ridden rn on my shoulder because there he was as sassy as you please' He gave a daring swoop down and around rn one ear and out the other then perchrng nonchalantly on a sunbeam he cocked hrs head on one side leered at me rn contempt and seemed to say Well my dear you re not so spry as you were ten years ago are you'7 I Marie Lane had had a particularly trying day at the office Qafter all being the pri vate secretary to the Governor of Alabama rs no easy Jobj and I considered the hornet s words an insult But I couldn t suppress a smile as memories came floodrng into my mind Ten years ago? Let s see where was I ten years ago In a flash I thought of that other hornet s nest dear old Austrnvtlle High School When the frnal bell rang every day d1dn t we all pour through the front door in much the same manner that these ltvely little hornets had poured from their disturbed nest? Yes as I think back on rt called our famous basketball team The Hornet s 'P One of those players Tommy Allen has gained natron wide fame on the ball court He rs now head coach at the Unrverstty of Alabama Hrs buddy Billy Gene Woodall rs now Governor of Alabama H C Long IS manager of the ASLP store with Bobby Free as lus assistant Doris Key rs manager of the Singer Sewing Center Carol Ann Hames IS head sales lady of the Drane Shop l see Margarett Maples rs the Superintendent of South Highland Infirmary She has three cute little nurses who are Ruby Lee McCulloch Ruth King and Bettye Long Kenneth Jackson is head ofa btg insurance company and Bettye Sue Johnston is his private secretary I heard that Wayne Ratlrff is director of a string band By the way W1ndleHo1bert rs hrs guitar player Wayne Lott owns a studio with Mathyleen McDonald as his helper Verna Mae Lamon and NellPrater are students at Florence State TeachersCollege By the way Truman Beggs rs President of the college l see a vine covered cottage where Mrs Ernestine Hughes lives and right across the street IS where Mr and Mrs Sonny McClanahan hve Ella Mae McCa1g rs director of a rnodehng school and Flora Nell Jett rs one of the models She still rs Just as cute as she was when she was in school I see Tommy Wallace IS strll carrying a money box arorrnd with him since he was elected Treasurer of the United States Jimmy Srvley 1S strll raising cattle just as he was when he was rn school Helen Bradford seems to be takmg life easy Maybe she s patrently waiting for her lover to come back from the Air Force Shirley Corum rs strll at Dear Old Austmvtlle She s teaclung Home Economics l see where Mr and Mrs Donnie Engle were happily married That guy could belong to none other than Sarah Beddtngfield . . . . , . , . , V - . . .. . . . , , I I I . . .
