Executive Officer Commander james J. Bird United States Navy I Commander Bird is a native of Scituate, Massachusetts. He attended Illinois Institute of Technology on a NROTC scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1979. Sea duty assignments have included USS DETROIT CAOE-41 Damage Control Assistant USS BELLEAU WOOD QLHA 35 as Electrical Ofiicer and Damage Control Assistant USS REASONER CPF 10651 as Engineer Officer and USS FORT Mcl-IENRY CLSD 431 as Engineer Officer Following his sea tours Commander Bird attended the marine Corps Command and Staff College and was subsequently assigned to the I 3 Directorate on the staff of USCINCLANT He reported to USS AUSTIN in September 1995 Personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal Navy Commendatlon Medal C25 Navy Achievement Medal as well as various service awards Commander Bird his wife Brenda and their children james and Victoria reside in Chesapeake Virginia Q1 akmabxs. 4- Commanding Officer Captain Andrew M. Petrusea United States Navy A ndrew M. Petruska was born in Washington, DC on 10 September 1946, the son ofLCDR Andrew Perruska,1r., USN fRet1. Ile graduated from the University of South Florida in 1968, entered Naval Officer Candidate School and was commissioned an Ensign in April 1969. Following his commissioning, CAPT Petruska had consecutive duty afloat until 1972 sewing in USS ALBATROSS CMSC 2891 and USS HENRY B. WILSON CDDG 71. After graduation from U. S. Naval Destroyer School in October 1972, he served as Operations Officer in USS NOA KDD 8411. Following his duty afloat, CAPT Petruska served as Assistant Professor of Naval Science, Florida A8CM University NROTC Unit from August 1973 to june 1976. Returning to sea, he was First Lieutenant in USS RACINE CLST 11911 from July 1976 to February 1978. Selected to attend a foreign war college, CAPT Petruska was an honor graduate of the Defense Language Institute and from Septem- ber 1978 to june 1980 attended the German Naval War College, llamburg, West Germany. CAPT Petruska served as Executive Officer in USS RICHARD L. PAGE EFFG 51 from August 1980 until May 1982. He next 'Q 3 Y XSS AUSTIN - .ff Change of Command commanded USS FORTIFY CMSO 4461 from Selntember 1982 to May 1984 and then commanded USS NEWPORT CLST 11791 from june 1984 to July 1986. During this time both ships were awarded the Battle Efficiency E , Returning ashore, CAPT Petruska served as Force Plans!Fleet Introduction Officer on the staff of Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic. He reported to USS SAIPAN QLHA 21 as Executive Officer in August 1988 and served in that billet until October 1990. During this time SAIPAN conducted the evacuation of over 1600 civilians from the civil war in Liberia. Promoted to the rank of Captain in August 1990, Captain Petruska next assumed duties as Executive Officer, Surface Warfare Officers School Command in Newport, RI. Prior to assuming command of USS AUSTIN CLPD-41, Captain Petruska attended the U.S. Naval War College, graduating with distinction in March 1994. CAPT Petruska holds master of science degrees from Florida State University and the Naval War College. He is a designated sub-Spe- cialist in National Security Affairs, Europe. H18 decorations include the Meritorious ServiCC Medal ffour awards1, the Navy Commendation Medal fthree awards1, and various campaign and unit awards. CAPT Petruska is married to the former 10Hf1 Lindsey of Tampa, Florida. The Petruska's have 21 son, Marcus Andrew, and a daughter, Anne Michelle. When not cruising aboard their Freedom 32, Windswept,,' they reside in Virginia Beach.

Command Master Chief TMCMKSWXSSD WILLIAM E. FARROW United States Navy M aster Chief Farrow is a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he graduated from high school in 1975. He enlisted in the Navy in june 1975, and completed Recruit Training followed by Torpedoman Mate A School in Orlando, Florida and Enlisted Basic Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut. Shore tours have been as Recruiter-in-Charge, Navy Recruiting Station, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Follow on Shore Duty at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Florida as Company Commander, Department LCPO, Apprentice Training School. Sea duty assignments have included USS GRAYBACK 155-5741, homeported out of Subic Bay, Philippines, completed two tours on the USS LEWIS AND CLARK KSSBN 6441, in which he completed 16 strategic deterrent patrols. He reported to USS AUSTIN in February 1992. Personal awards include the Enlisted Surface Warfare Pin, Submarine Service Pin, Navy Commendation Medal CZJ, Navy Achievement Medal 121, as well as various service awards.
