To all who shall see these presents, greetings! This cruise book tells the story of six months in the life of USS AUSTIN and the nearly one thou- sand sailors and Marines who served in her during MARG 2-94. During this deployment, Austin com- pleted an unprecedented series of operations which included transiting the Atlantic Ocean, extensive i operations throughout the Mediterranean, transiting the Suez Canalllfted Sea for contingency opera-, tions off the coast of Somalia, and being one of the first amphibious ships to operate near the formerl Soviet Union in the Black Sea. At one point, these operations included 40 consecutive days at sea. 1 In addition, the ship visited England, France, Crete, Bulgaria, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, Greece, Kenyai and participated in the historic 50th D-Day anniversary ceremonies at Normandy. Mere statistics cannot tell the story of the sacrifices made by Austin Crewmen during this deploy-- ment, but they do give a flavor for the magnitude of what was accomplished. These statistics include: 1 - over six thousand flight deck evolutions ltakeoffs and landingsl, two thousand of which weret done using night vision goggles. -tracked and reported over 7,000 surface contacts. - sentlreceived 40,000 messages. - burned nearly three million gallons of fuel. - distilled over three million gallons of fresh water. - conducted 19 replenishments at sea. LGU - performed 26 Iaunchlrecoveries of Austin's embarked - served over half a million meals. - lifted nearly two million pounds of cargo. - provided medicalfdental services to over 2,200 patients. . As 'you look through this cruise book-l hope you will remember with me the camaraderie, profes- SIOHS ISTTI and great sense of accomplishment which making this deployment gives. Each of you. whose picture appears inthe following pages Cgntributed to this effort- Thank you and well done! Sincerely, Gm. A.M. PETRUSKA CAPT, USN Commanding Officer
