SHIPS LOG ' USS AUSTIN deployed 25 january 1991 to participate in Marine Amphibious Ready Group CMARGD 1-91, Inchop the Mediterranean Sea in early February. Immediately after inchop AUSTIN participated in BETACOM CSpanish Air Assaultj an exercise designed to integrate us and Spanish forces. After this AUSTIN conducted a 28 day restricted availability in Toulon, France, where the crew workedlong hours in order to complete many overhaul type jobs. After Toulon AUSTIN proceeded to the island of Corsica and conducted an Amphibi- ous exercise with NATO forces from Spain, France, and Italy. AUSTIN then enjoyed a six day Easter vacation on the Island of Palma De Mallorca, Spain. AUSTIN then proceeded to the coast of France to conduct Mayflower an exer- cise with French forces. Immediately after this AUSTIN proceeded to Sardina to conduct another amphibious exercise with our NATO allies from Italy, France, and Spain, but this one was cut short due to world events. AUSTIN was ordered to Iskenderun, Turkey in support of Operation Provide Comfort. AUSTIN offloaded most of the Marines from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit CMEUD who went to build tent cities and give food to the homeless Kurdish rebels of Iraq. After about a month of support OPS in Turkey AUSTIN proceeded to Italy to conduct exercise Dragon-Hammer '91, a major NATO exercise involving armed forces of Spain, France, Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Turkey, and Belgium. AUSTIN embarked the Commander Amphibious Task ForceCCATFj and Commander Landing Force CCLFJ taking on a new role as flag ship. After this excellent exercise AUSTIN conducted a much needed port visit to Naples, Italy where many of the crew were allowed to go on a large variety of tours from a Papal Visit to exploration of the ruins of Pompeii. After this much needed rest AUSTIN returned to Turkey to continue support of 24th MEU Forces. About this time the MARG was extended by three weeks. With the extension came one last port visit to Haifa, Israel where crew members toured everywhere from the Red Sea to Nazareth. After this AUSTIN proceeded to Isk- enderun Turkey to onload the Marines and return home. .

Mazich, USNR, is a native of Danville, Pennsylvania and a 1977 graduate of the U.S. Naval Acade- my. He has served ashore at Surface Warfare Officer Schools Command, Newport, R.I. and as Commanding Officer, Naval Reserve Center, St. Petersburg, Florida, Sea duty assignments include tours in USS MCCANDLESSQFF 1084? HS First Lieutenant and later Main Propulsion Assistant, in USS AINSWORTH CFF 10901 as Engineer Officer and in U55 EDSON QDD 9461 as Engineer Officer. V Commander Mazich is married to the former Amy Louise Albanese of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. They have a daugh- ter, Emily Victoria and a son, Thomas Francis. A Commander Mazich is authorized to wear the Navy Commendation Medal with two Gold Stars. 6
