Chezem First Division Second Division Combat Cargo Officer Deck Department, manned by those legendary gentlemen the Boatswain's Mates, is charged with the operation, maintenance, and preservation of all topside machinery, the operation and maintenance of the Austin's small boats, everything and anything relating to weapons and weapon systems except the Super Arboc system, and all interior and exterior painting. There are three full-time divisions in the Deck Department, First, Second, and Third. Fourth Division is made up of personnel from First and Second Divisions to provide a pool of expertise for extensive painting requirements and requirements from the sail locker. First and Second Divisions are responsible for a multitude of ship-wide evolutions. First Division calls the focsle home and is responsible for anchoring the ship as well as tending the forward lines. Second Division launches and recovers Austin's small boats with the B 81 A crane. It is also in charge of the boat davit and the motor whale boat it supports which is used in man overboard rescues. Working jointly, the two divisions man most of the well deck operation stations and are in charge of the embarkation and debarkation of amphibious landing craft, cargo, troops, and vehicles. They also maintain upper and lower vehicle storage spaces, the accommodation ladders, and the bulk of the Marine troop side spaces. Not to be outdone by anyone when it comes to macho FirSI and Second Division provide the bulk of the muscle needed to prepare the decks and move the stores received aboard during underway replenishments. The key role of Third Division is to provide the Austin with both offensive and defensive capabilities In accomplishing their mission the Gunners Mates operate and maintain all the small arms and ammunition onboard, -maintain the ship's pyrotechnics lockerS. magazines, and their safety sprinkler systems, store and transfer all Marine ammunition onboard, and instruct small arms familiariza- tion to the crew. lt's a big job for a small group of very dedicated men. Interfacing, that's the job of the Combat Cargo Department.
