LtE.P,sAcKEN LT JG -1-PLATEN f... NAVIGATIGIXI Determining the safest and most expeditious route for getting USS Austin from point to point B is the responsibility ofthe Navigation Department. An integral part of that responsibility involves the procurement, correction, and storage of all the navigational charts used in transiting operational areas selected by the Command. The Quarter- masters also maintain all navigational records, as well as maintain and store all of thelnavigational aids aboard ship. Since meteorologic personnel are not assigned to Austin's crew, the QM's are responsible for making observations and keeping pertinent records which -are used to assist the Command in predicting weather and sea conditions.
