Though the demands of AUSTlN'S crew range from engineering machinery costing hundreds of thousands of dollars down to a tooth brush or a pack of cigarettes, the Supply Department somehow manages to keep us cleanly dressed, fed, paid, and fulfilling our mission. Supply is made up of four divisions: S-1 through S-4,-and each provides a distinct essential service to meet the needs of the crew. S-1 Division is primarily responsible for the requisitioning, stowage, and issuance of repair parts and consumable materials. As a part of that task, the storekeeper's responsibilities include the allocation of and accounting for ship's funds as well as the proper documentation of all expenditures. S-2's mission is to provide the crew of AUSTIN with wholesome, well balanced meals prepaired under the most sanitary conditions possible and served in an atmosphere which is conducive to good dining. The Mess Specialists of S-2 Division are responsible for the ordering, receipt, storage, issuance, and preparation of all food stores and the operation of all the various shops that make up the Enlisted Dining Facility. ENS Michael Morris . , ENS Jan Dray The Operations Department has the primary responsibility of planning the individual in-house evolutions which will result in the USS AUSTIN successfully completing her assigned tasks. Thelfour divisions which make up the department provide the information network which allows the Command to track its progress in accomplishing its mission. Providing the Commanding Officer with the big picture is the responsibility of Ol Division and the Combat information Center. CIC serves as a clearinghouse of information. The Operations Specialists use surface radar, air search radar, electronic warfare computers, and input from other ships, marine units ashore, and lookouts posted at key points around the ship. to gather as much data as possible. The CIC Watch Officer analyzes how each piece of data is relevent to the safe operation of the ship and relays this information, along with his recommendations, to the Officer of the Deck. CIC is the nerve center which coordinates the maneuvering of all landing craft during amphibious beach assaults as well as the movement of small boats from ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore, as part of the Austin's administrative and supp0ff requirements. ' Similar to the OI Division in many respects, the OW Division, manned by the Electronic Warfare Technicians, operate and maintain the sophisticated receivers used in detecting and analyzing radar signals from outside sources. By studying the frequency and wave characteristics of a signaI's transmission pattern, the EW's can provide vital information to the CIC Watch Officer. AIR DEPARTMENT Versatile is the best word to describe Austin's Air Department. ln supporting the ship's mission of getting embarked troops and their equipment ashore, the personnel of V Division conduct flight operations involving virtually every type of rotary aircraft found in the Navy! Marine Corps inventory as well as the AV-8A Harrier vertical takeoff and landing tactical jet aircraft. As a servicing and support platform, Austin Air can support detachments, ranging from the AH-1T Cobra gunships, up to and including The CH-53E and staging the CH53D Airborne Mine Countermeasures aircraft. The men of Austin's V Division achieved a first by successfully completing a Helicopter In-Flight Refueling QHIFFU with the new Marine Corps CH-53E aircraft. This was the first time such an exercise was conducted from the deck of any LPD. Able to operate both day and night, the critical mission of projecting and supporting forces ashore is a continuous challenge that Austin Air meets daily.
