AS YOU LEAVE AUSTIN Greetings and salutations to the graduat- ing members of the class of June 1945, as well as to those who left us in January. e You young people have just finished an exciting four years, almost the entire time of which your country has been at war. You have been called upon to obtain your formal high school edu- cation during this strenuous period and yet at the same time give service to your country and the community as no other young people have ever done before. The record of your four years will show that your efforts and those of your classmates who have already gone into the armed forces have helped to bring your beloved country to at least the half-way point on the road to total Victory. Congratulations on a tough job well done. As I wish you God-speed and best wishes as you leave us for the four corners of the earth, may I hope that you will treasure those ideals of service, tolerance, and the desire for perfection that we have tried to give you here at the Austin High School.

.xdclminiafrafion .J- K PRINCIPAL HOBART H. SOMMERS Austinis greying-but handsome-prin- cipal, Hobart H. Sommers, is one of those rare persons gifted with uncanny insight plus a magnetic personality and charm. Since he first came to Austin in 1940, the years have piled upon each other, but these have been war years, and, more than any other person in Austin, Mr. Sommers has felt the stress of them. It has been his prime task to win every entering freshman over to the belief that education should be something desired and cherished rather than viewed with dislike. A good 65 per cent of Austinites in the past year have worked in various jobs out- side of school and naturally this work has had a pronounced effect on their perform- ances at school. Perhaps they tire faster by combining the two or their thoughts stray from studies to the job they hold, but whatever it is, Mr. Sommers has faced the task of keeping the student body on the beam and has come through with an admirable record. Mr. Sommers' desire for near perfection is frequently disturbing to some, for we all know of the careful supervision given to every assembly held at Austin. ,I 'Z ,Gr X X - ' i f A ,N lj 1 'iid fyaa As down the hall we dash, We see a spijfy mustache, Followed by a broad smile. HUMISTON Mr. Harry Humiston, assistant princi- pal, besides being responsible for the origi- nation of pupil programs from one semes- ter to another, is the chief trouble shooter of the school and as a court of appeal, he deals with parents, students, teachers, chairmen, attendance counselors and the registrar. The statistical data of the school is another one of his responsibilities and in his reports to the Superintendent's Of- fice, he charts the trends in enrollment and subject demands. He is responsible also for assembly seating. Mr. Humiston has served in his present capacity in the regime of two principals, first Mr. Wright and now Mr. Sommers. In the interval before the coming of Mr. Sommers, Mr. Humiston was acting prin- cipal. Earlier he was Dean of Boys and Math teacher. A quiet, unassuming man, he is rarely in the forefront of school activities, al- though his personal appearances at assem- blies are very rare. Nonetheless his service to the school and the students has placed him high in the eyes of his admirers and friends. Weire proud and thankful to have him! He plans programs for all, Lives in spring while itjs fall, A senior member of the ping pong crew. He's the second in line, ' At 231 North Pine, And heis ever ready to serve you.
