Step inside and see the greatest, most magnificent display of ferocious animals, clowns in their full bright colors, daring aerial artists, brave, courageous trainers facing the dangers of the arena, and an extra special side show with ghe most astounding collection of the world's wonders and reaks. Before the show starts we wish to express our most sincere appreciation to Miss Pellens, art adviser, and Mr. Berens, general adviser, for their able assistance in raising the canvas and getting the show under way. To Severinghaus Printing Co., Osgood Engraving Co,, and Russell Photography Studio, who have helped to an- nounce our arrival and let the general public know what we look like, we also extend our thanks. The editor solicits a general hand-clapping for her staff mates and other helpers too numerous to mention, but espe- cially to Hugh Ray and jerry Cloud, who unasked came to our aid with the cry, On With the Show. It is a joyous crew that has shared in recent perform- ances in the old top, the tower-crowned old Austin high. From the chief trainer, Mr. Wright, and the ringmasters, the teachers, down through the ranks of all the miscellany of performers and the monkeys in the menagerie, if any, we believe the spirit of Austin nowadays is really the spirit of joyous performance, and so to it we have dedictated this book. The parade is passing, the tent is opened, and the admis- sion is paid, for which you may come again and again back to your circus school days. Step right up folks, the performance is about to start. It includes in your plans for achievements in future years a factor greater than that of the unaided human intellect. This factor is a sense of joy in your chosen work. Cultivate it. I For the past several years the old tent due to its over-crowded condi- tions has housed its two-year commercial students under a separate canvas namely the i'Orr Branch. On the top floor of the Resin Orr School, Mr. Brush, chief trainer, and his efficient staff of assistants, have for several semesters been turning out to the business world artists in typewriting, shorthand, cal- culating, and bookkeeping in the short show-time of four semesters. It is the expected future that when the new big top is completed next year, the old top and new top combined will be able to house the contents of the two, Resin Orr and I-lay branches, and thus do away with the two over- flow tents. 57 2,- Vw ORR NOON HOUR 58 dy: f CTS c .u.f..f. cf , , ww mil Class of '29 V Bang! ! ! The final performance of the great circus is gradually ap- proaching its climax. The director, Mr. Wilfred Bryant, with his stove pipe hat and Parisian cane is seen in the center ring supervising the whole works. I-lis business-like assistant, Mr. john Zepp, is glancing about to see what he can do. There sits the faithful Grace Karstens in a box seat recording the feats of the day. So many perople are buying tickets that the ticket agent, Mr. William Tauber, has two helpers, Elmer Kissane and Robert Niesen. t The chief of police, Mr. jack Pastor, and another official from the protec- tion force, Robert Mould, are keeping order. Boom! bah! rah! The world's most renowned athletes are now kicking balloons, or throwing balls weighing a thousand pounds, or running on a sus- pended string which is one-sixreenth of an inch in width, or making a wild dash for the swimming pond. The famous recoilers are Zepp, Mayer, and Glenng the magic ball hurlers are Tauber, Kanning, Reese, Nelson, Lagorio, Malloy, and Matthews, the tracksters include Murray and Tauberg and the heroic divers are Whittman and Hoelzer. I Now a stage show in all its grandeur and jollity is being portrayed. Orig- inal stunts by the well-known actors and actresses, Josephine Allin, Roth, Salopoulos, Virginia Overton, and Grace Nelson, and a musical comedy by Wais, Freemuth, Dorothy Anderson, Pauline Patton, jaekel, and Oakman are being presented. Other novelties in progress are: an exquisite French style show, led by Riva Golbing a parody on a German opera, under the leadership of Wilma Kaitschukg a reproduction of the play, Julius Caesar, Shirley Stade taking the leading roleg and a Spanish dance, directed by Olga de la Pena. Other groups are being led by Peg McLaren, Helen Lyons, Florence Sorenson. The three most distinguished acrobats are Grayce Meyers, Billie Wood, and Boots Stotz. The success of the circus is partly due to the publicity in the Austin Times and some of its talented journalists, Genevieve Dilger, Frances Gordon, Vir- ginia Mueller, Dorothy Walp, Leslie Deimel, ,Josephine Allin, William Finn, john Burns, and Wilma Kaitschuk. 60 u Aung' N :wif fl! if T A Class of 295 Z Manager: Howard Asp Assistant Manager: Ethel Doolittle Business and Publicity: Charlotte Ray Ticket Seller: Louis Deubler Ring Master: Arthur Silver First Ring: Tumblers: joe Weber, Al Kapecki Trapese Artists: Vera Dahlgren, Bertha Hafner. Greatest show on earth, Walter Gardiner of the News. Ethel Doolittle M l ' ' in gut win ' . . mug. Class of 30 53329 'N pw, gy - ,, Laydeez and gentlemen! Step right up and observe the Ring Master of '30, Howard Pierce, clearing the way for Doris Zack, bare back rider, whose snow-white steed is swiftly pursued by Heet-footed Rolf Berg, Ed Brickman, and john Sbertoli. Near a raised platform a group of ardent admirers, namely, Marian Heb- bard, Virginia Ogden, Anne Kammerling, and Lauretta Otzko are amazedly watching the strong man, Bob Van der Noor, splendidly arrayed in leopard skins, lifting a mere five hundred pound weight. To the left stand Rosalind Harry and Viola Voss singing a rollicking tune to the ukelele accompaniment of Norma jane Chiclley and Alice Coburn, all of whom look very circusy in slightly abbreviated tulle costumes and jeweled headress. The refrain has a disturbing inHuence on its audience, Leroy Cousineau, Ferdinand Berley, Philip Yurgens, and Russel Pritchard, who are practicing their breath-taking acrobatic feat in which the unfortunate Ferdinand is tossed high into the air by the absent-minded Philip, who has been known to forget to catch him on his return to earth. An interested group of idle performers reposing in the sawdust, Louis De Hainut, David Spaulding, Wesley Westerberg, Henry Schwartz, and Walter Weber are listening to Magician Robert Elliot account of how he captured the first prize on costume day at Austin. Howard Tench and Burton Duval, the serious-minded sword swallowers, are deeply meditating over the important question- What happens to cotton candy after it has reached their mouths? The worlds greatest tight rope walker, Albert Todoroff, is blythely trip- ping along a rope high up in the canvas sky, and just a little higher up, the trapese Hyers, Ruth Ostrand, Dorothy Turney, Conchita Serra, and Olga Zimmermand are swinging back and forth. A few hungry bystanders, Alice Carlson, Kathryn Trimble, and George Fry are consuming huge quantities of crisp popcorn and drinking wabbly paper cup fulls of pink lemonade, while catching a glimpse of circus life in the '30 ring. Florence Cannon. 62 .Q op omores Wg. v- -.4 'pysul Act Two of the Circus coming up! Loudly cheering them on is a little five-foot-four athlete carrying, strangely enough, a secretary's notebook and pencil. Closer view reveals the features of Howie Miller, 262, captain of cheer leaders, and secretary of both History club and Little Theater. His two assistants are Ford Clark, 262, and Robert Kaska, 262, who besides being a cheer leader is president of the Kas Kats Klub of Section 262, and has the part of Pooh-Bah in the Mikado. The sophomores have representatives in nearly all of Austin's clubs and activities. june Ward, 216, is president of the morning Astral club, and Charlotte Ray, 210, is president of the morning Y club. Francis Iser, 216, and Edna Spolander, 259, are respectively the program chairmen of the above clubs. The secretary of the morning Y is Rhona Deans, 214, and the treas- urer of the morning Astral club is Bernice Brekke, 212. Mildred Schwollow, 216, is a Super-super student and holds the job of refreshment chairman of the morning Astral club. One of Austin's most brilliant pianists is lsmene Papageorge, 258, who, besides being the accompanist of the Girls' Glee club, is pin chairman of the Spanish club and program chairman of the Ukelele club. The only sophomore reporter this semester is jerry Cloud, 257, jerry has the honor of being connected with two papers, The Chicago Daily News, and The Austin Times. The football and track teams claim Hugh Ray, 255, as one of their mem- bers. Frances Raeder, 262, is a champion ukelele player, and was an orphan in Daddy Long-Legs. Evelyn Benson, 212, is a prominent member of the Girls' Athletic Association. Dorothy Moorehead, 259, is also a basket-ball player, as well as being pin chairman of the Y club. PROPHESY: If these up-and-coming sophomores continue their active work, the classes of 'ZOM and '31 will have no lack of either scholarly or athletic members from which to choose responsible class officers. Let's go. Three rousing cheers for the Menagerie. Under the great top, the cheers rose to a crescendo. In the center of the ring, their great manes swaying with might and power, and their huge mouths uttering growls and roars, to make Austinites the more respect them, stood the mighty lions of the menagerie, better known to Austin as the Student Council. 65 Board of Health Humphrey Hol ik Cannon Florio Gollnick Nolan Hock Grey Well known, and highly respected, the Student Council is the student- governing body of the school, whose purpose it is to promote and govern student activities. lt is made up of members from every phase of school lifeg the C. l. C., the Austin Times, the four upper classes, lnterclub, the G. A. A., Girls' Athletics, and the Varsity A, Boys' Athletics. Every accredited club enrolled in Austin is represented in the Interclub which is composed of club presidents. lt works steadily on the improvements of organizations and does all it can to promote better fellowship and school spirit. The C. I. C. fCivic Industrial Clubj is the largest organization in school, and claims practically every student as a member. lt is to be congratulated upon the successful results obtained by all of its various committees and their helpers. The Clean-up Campaign is the main event of the Spring term, and the Clean-up committee will again uphold its honor when it lays death at the door of dirt. The honorary scholarship society of Austin is the Astral Club to which only students of super-honor roll average are eligible. The purpose of the College Club is to acquaint girls with American Colleges and to stimulate in them a desire to attend college. Every year a scholarship is awarded to some worthy girl, who would otherwise be unable to go. The sgmior College Club for freshmen and sophomore girls is a branch of the College ub. A group of language clubs, the Latin, French, German, and Spanish Clubs, were formed to stimulate student interest in the various tongues. There are educational clubs such as the H istory, Biology, and Architectural, in which students find wider fields of knowledge about a favorite subject. 66 lnterclub Watters Golbin Swanson Silver Charwas Mould Brown Stade Sorensen Serra Ray Harry McLaren Kaitschuk de la Pena Hackley Neuman Lyon Rollins Herzherg Young Ridder Benson Faust Annamarie Young, Pres.g Gladys I-Icrzberg, Scribe, Miss Deaton, Adviser. As for literary interest, the Pentong and Reading Clubs deal with the read- ing and appreciation of recognized good literature. The Y and Hi-Y Clubs whose purpose it is to promote good fellow- ship and high ideals among the students, are sponsored by the Y. W. C. A. and the Y. M. C. A. The Girls' Senior Council was organized for the beneht of freshmen who enter Austin bewildered. its purpose is to acquaint them with the customs, clubs, and ideals of Austin, instill in them an enthusiastic school spirit, and urge them on to a successful high career. Still other organizations are the Aviation, Cartoonists and Home Economics Clubs which are continually doing big things in their individual lines. The stupendous show is over, Many of the crowds are leaving the circus and its menagerie behind them, in search of newer, greater things that life can give them. To them may the menagerie of Austins' Clubs journey with them in their hearts and help bring success in another menagerie, that of the world. Yet many of the crowds linger, hungry for more, and hesitating to leave for a while at least. To them may the menagerie have brought a sense of love and appreciation, and a determination to see more of that great tent of activity in the days to come. 67 C. l. C. Victory at last! But a victory that was fought for every minute of play and hoped for by every one of the five thousand Austin students and alumni that were present. While the cheering preceding the game may have been considered loud it was nothing compared to the terrific din raised by the rooters when our '-:' I i ' zbq H, maroon and white jerseyed little scrappers took to the field. The whole gang, somehow, knew it was their day. ,- Oak Park kicked off to the Austin cohorts, who worked the ball up to the fifty yard line. Coach Ring then sent in VT , Gil Callies to replace Doner, and two plays later Callies whipped a pass to Benny Sohn Cdestined to be the hero of ..:: A the dayj who gave a classy demonstration of open field running while traversing the remaining distance to the promised land. Coach Ring Austin's first touchdown. And the seething, cheering, joy-mad crowd of rooters did not intend to let their rivals forget it. Oak Park then demonstrated its gameness by carrying the ball, by sheer strength, to the Austin sixteen yard line, here a fifteen yard penalty put the ball on our one yard line. Now was the time when the expression all hot and bothered pertained to all loyal Austinites. But Austin weatlfered the repeated drives of the Oak Park backs for three downs and was rewarded by the whistle which ended the half with the ball on the eighteen inch line. The second half found the two teams surging back and forth over the Held. Oak Park having the advantages in collecting more first downs but being repulsed at the crucial moments, at which times johnny Zepp, our fullback, would send beautiful punts soaring down the field, with the Austin ends and backs under them. ln the closing moments of play Oak Park heaved many passes in a des- perate attempt to score. One of these tosses intended for the huskie's left end, Lavicks, was intercepted by Sohn, who this time galloped fifty yards for Austin's second touchdown. The game ended as Benny missed the try for extra point. I-lappy Austinites then poured onto the field to release their pent-up emotions in the manufacture of whoopie. 121 'Hvsv Y QQVUL Nagf A V11 .MC x g Q RINGS ALL-STAR CAST! 122 jowmvrp 'WEL HOLE-H f Tf,a.g 5. Paddy Driscolls proteges held a 7 to 6 lead over our fellows in the third quarter but the Maroon and White grid-men got under way and sunk the heavy St. Mel team to the tune of 19 to 7 , Crane Tech almost proved a stumbling block to Austin's section-hopes but the first team entered the fray and tamed the techmen 8 to 2. Austin vanquished McKinley 24 to 0 in an easy game at Mill's Stadium. Marshall and Harrison both took Austin, the scores being 13 to 0 and 6 to 0 respectively. Both games were played on muddy fields and the locals were handicapped by lack of weight. Austin smeared the Northwestern Cadets in the final gridiron battle of the season. The first team scored heavily in the second half and the cadets were on the short end of a 32 to 7 total. 125 'C cow , 1 . Q f ' . ,X S u f..a,rf 'X . s. The months of September and October found a rather small group of cinder-pounders running on the old bridle path in Columbus Park in preparation for the cross-country meet. On November 10, the team of Ronin, Garrison, Chouinard, Brickman, and Capt. Nelson finished among the leaders. Hopes for a good indoor team are bright with the return of many veterans of last season, this gang including Baker, Berg, Tauber, Brickman, Kassay, Murrey, Nelson, and Ronin. The latest additions, Garrison, Block, Ray, Chouinard, and johnson have shown up well and with a little more experience they should develop into a fast-stepping outfit. Mid-year graduation will take its toll of some of the best trackmen ever developed at Austin, when Big Bill Baker and Carl Klafs, stellar performers in both the pole vault and high jump, will leave along with Leonard Pete Ronin, the dependable 880 yard star, who could be counted on for points in any meet and Capt. Herb Nelson, the mile ace. All four fellows have had three years of prep competition with Baker the out- standing athlete. Ed Brickman, Rolf Berg, Art Kassay, and Bill Tauber will carry the bulk of the work in the outdoor season, and it will be around these men that a new team will develop. The junior aggregation led by Captain Murphy lacks experience, but the spirit of the material promises a formidable team. In the First meet, Harrison fell before the Austin senior tracksters at the former's gym, by a 40 to 38 score, the relay decided the meet, which up to that event, had favored Harrison. 129 U !13w:z'sf Av D 'Q x , Goin ,Vtf.
