Below: Aimee Hinkle Tendra Adkins Never a dull moment — more than a few surprises — life at Austin High Student Life This year Austin School has again seen a growth in population. We en- ded last year with about 145 students. This year we swelled to 191 at our peak. Since our new school is not due to be completed till next year and our walls wouldn’t stretch anymore, a mo- bile unit was added. This new unit added two rooms to our school. Also this year, our school welcomed Mr. Wayne Montgomery as the new school principal. Mr. Montgomery has been a principal in both Idaho and Nevada. He attained his degree in administra- tion at Boise College and Rutgers Uni- versity. We look forward to his being here along with the new school for many years to come. Below left: Mr. Montgomery addresses the Indians and the Pilgrims. Below right: Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Mrs. Dalluge selling tickets at the Carnival. There are many things that I could advise you on concerning your years at this school. However most people choose to experience things for themselves and discover what works best for them. The years that you will spend at this school are but few, but the knowledge that you gain here will have a lasting effect on the rest of your life. If you take advantage of every educational opportunity and involve yourselves in the many worthwhile activities going on around this school and community, then your experience here will take on a new meaning for you. More importantly, these worthwhile experiences will prepare you to take your place in America as a contributing citizen. To those of you who have found the value of an education, I wish you the greatest opportunities in your pursuit of knowledge and the best of times in finding out what works for you. I have enjoyed serving as the Principal of your school and trust that the relationships that we have established with each other will long be remembered. Mr. Montgomery, Principal 5 The PTA Halloween Carnival was a roaring success. Each class participated in some way. The 7th grade had the jail, the 8th grade sold chorizo’s. The Freshmen had a food booth. The Sophomores had the haunted house, the Juniors had the cake walk and the Seniors had a pie eating contest. Each elementary room set up games. It seemed like most of Austin turned out to enjoy the festivities of the evening. The fun ended with the pie eating contest, won by Bobby Helming. Above: The pie eating contest. HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL 6 Paint The “A” Day Painting the “A” has been the job of the Freshmen for many years at Aus- tin. The Seniors take on the solemn duty of supervising the pulling of weeds and applying of white wash to the “A” by the Freshman class. The Freshmen are always excited to see this day arrive! Often they are so anxious to begin that they don’t even wait for a ride up the hill, instead they run up the hill in their zeal to begin. When the job is done to everyones satisfaction you can usually see the Freshmen giving thanks that they had the privilege of providing this service to their school. There is never a dull moment at Austin High School! 35 Austin Homecoming 1988 AHS had it and everyone caught it. The ‘it’ was school spirit and pride. The Broncos were on a winning season and the school was looking great. The spirit week was participated in by all, and everyone had a blast trying to put their best side forward to win the spirit trophy. This year it went to the Senior Class, but competition was close all week long. Competition was also close among the King and Queen Candi- dates. But as always, everything was done in good spirit. Here Adv. Mike Tremayne has dessert. The 1988 Academic Olympics and High School Bowl season was an ex- citing one. Urged on by Mr. Dean with such comments as “I’m a sore loser!” and “If you lose you won’t eat!”, the Academic Olympics team finished sec- ond in Nevada with an overall record of 11-6. High School Bowl also went well for the Austin team. Austin won the championship with a record of 4-0. Even though we lose four seniors this year, the future of Austin aca- demic competition looks bright. Lots of laughs, back seat orgies? rocking the car, patience, winners! 37 Student Council Close-Up This year’s Student Council was VERY interesting! The year started out with no one talking, no shouting, and believe it or not, no arguing!! This all ended, though, and soon we had some heated discussions and interest- ing policies passed. Some of the meet- ings were chaos, others proved to be very positive. We acquired a new school stereo, two ping tables, the re- instatement of junior high cheer- leaders, and more school spirit; just to name a few positive points the council achieved. I am very thankful to have been President of AHS, and I have every bit of confidence James Horan will do an even better job in 1988-89. The key to James’ success will lie in the hands of MR. MONTGOMERY. His help, support, and ways were ter- rific! THANKS MR. MONTGOMERY!
