PIERSON WE WILL MISS YOU! When this annual is given to the students in the fall of 1987 I will be, as the students say, “history.” The five years at Austin Schools have been a true educational experience for me. I feel that the five years that my family and I have spent at Austin have been productive years. We feel that the educational programs, staff, and general maintenance have improved. We also saw the passing of a school bond issue for the new high school in Austin which was one of our major goals. We, also after a great deal of inner-turmoil, feel that leaving Austin was the best decision for our family. We would like to wish all of you at Austin Schools and the community of Austin best wishes for the future. 2 DIANNA ELKINS—My goals for after I graduate are to get married to Willie Evans and never get into debt. Even though he is always buying things he should wait for. TONYA CAMPBELL—My goal is to attend Stanford University and hopefully make something out of my life. CANDACE CUSHMAN—After I graduate I would like to find a job and work for a year and then go to college in Elko. JULIE JOHNSON—Eventually I would like to be a flight attendant—go through at least 2 years of college and of course be very successful! TASHA MOCK—My goals are to be a lifeguard this summer, then attend UNR and major in Elementary Ed., then teach in a small town, and after a couple of years, get married and have a small family. ALEX ROSE—I want to attend college at UNR. I want to complete four years of college maybe in 10 years. Frankly I don’t know what I’m going to do, check back with me in 10 years, Okay. Above: Pucker up Alex. Top Right: Julie hard at work. Right: Please hurry, I can’t hold this pose forever. Far Right: Zoe shows her stuff. SENIOR GLASS 4 CHARLIE ROSE—My goals are to graduate from college, get a high paying job, and to have a big house and lots of cars. But most of all I want to live through my senior party. CHERIE STAINBROOK—My goal in life is to be successful. JULIE THOMPSON—My goals are to thank my mother for everything she’s done for me, to fly to the ends of the earth, to attend college, to be successful, and to be with R. N. forever. LORETTA TODD—I want to graduate from college and become head buyer at a major clothing store. Someday I want to have my own clothing store. KELLI TRUE—I plan on working for the summer at Smokey Valley Mine, then who knows from there. ZOE WILLAV1ZE—My goals are to attend college and major in either Chemistry or Political Science. I will either be a chemist and find a cure for AIDS, or be a very famous lawyer. Top Left: Monkey in Action Top Middle: “Are you Ready? In district play the team tied with Jackpot for second place, and finished seventh at the state competition. Overall, the team finished in about the same place they did last year but since we will lose only three seniors this year we should be in a much stronger position next year since the other teams will lose a larger number of seniors from their teams. James Horan, Tonya Campbell, Tasha Mock, Stephen Lani, Zoe Willavize, Mr. Workman, Advisor, Loretta Todd HI H 5EHGJQL B0WL The 1987 High School Bowl team members were: James Horan, Stephen Lani, Bridey Thelen, Joe Ramos Jr., Zoe Willavize. Although this was the first year for High School Bowl, the Austin team turned in an excellent performance and finished in third place for 'B' schools. They would have made the championship round but lost to Eureka in the last minute of the semi-final match. Fortunately, the team will lose only one member to graduation and should be in the top three teams again next year. BOTTOM ROW: Bridey Thelen, Stephen Lani, Zoe Willavize, Captain; James Horan ' r Wf) The Junior High Academic Olympic team members were: Jolene Mastretti, Debbie Manzini, Joy Riley, Rachele Zimmerman Christy Jones. flEflBEMIE 0LYMPIES- dUNIQR HIGH While the team lacked numbers, it did not lack enthusiasm, dedication, or ability. The teams record against their only opponent, Eureka Junior High, was 2-3-1, not a bad record considering they were always playing with one or two players less than the usual six. 23 w LEFT TO RIGHT: 1ST ROW: Jason Manzini, Teresa Young, Peggy Workman, Katrina Young, Melissa Pierson. 2ND ROW: Yvonne Workman, Jackie Ramos, Casandra Workman, Rachelle Young, Jamie Manzini. 3RD ROW: Tendra Adkins, Amanda Zimmerman, Amy Adkins, Tandy Wise. 4TH ROW: Stephen Lani, Lauren Lani, Chris Pierson. 5TH ROW: Mrs. Dalluge, Mrs. Williams, Miss Benbow. But, we learned a lot together. A lot of practice, tears, and mistakes made for a year of memories. Our numbers decreased as the months passed by but the girls never gave up. By State we saw what kind of spirit they had. Our victory over Virginia City was aid- ed by all the teams supporting us and helping us with the yells. We never gave up even as our team was defeated by Pyramid Lake. The 1986-87 Cheerleaders did a Marvelous Job! Mrs. Dalluge d.V. IN FRONT: Branda Brooks, Manager; Mr. Glanzer, Coach; Tina Flatt, Manager The Austin Fillies ended the season with a 7-13 record. All in all it was a successful season. The Fillies were very young with only 3 seniors on the team. The younger players showed some promise for the future and also much improvement on their basketball skills during the course of the season. The 87-88 season should be one of improvement on their record as well as skills. The Fillies missed going to the State tournament when they lost a playoff game with Jackpot. They were down by 16 points at halftime, but through the efforts of Tonya Campbell they ended up losing by only 2 points. BOTTOM (LEFT TO RIGHT) Gilda Yadon, Tendra Adkins, Lauren Lani, Kim Stainbrook At the beginning of the season the Fillies set the goals of beating each team in our divi- sion at least once, and of going to the State Tournament, something our volleyball team had not done in six years. With extraordinary effort and determination the Fillies went to State in second place with a conference win loss record of 7 and 5. They lost to McDermitt at the State Tournament. Throughout the season the Fillies improved dramatically both in ability in attitude. Not only did they accomplish their team goals but also attained individual recognition as well. Tonya Campbell was named to both the ‘‘B” League Division 1 and All Division Teams. Tasha Mock made the Division 1 Team. It was a very successful season and one that won’t be forgotten by either the Fillies or their fans. VOLLEYBALL 32 JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL Lance Thomas, Bobby Grimes, Denny Zimmerman, Mike Tremayne, Coach; Scott Johnson, Alan Brady, Eric Todd, Chris Pierson, Manager. The six players, representing Austin’s junior varsity basketball team successfully completed their season. The team’s win loss record does not represent the team’s success. Their success has to be measured by the ex- perience and personal development gained by each individual team member. If the J.V. players improve as much in the coming years as they have this season, they will help main- tain Austin’s highly competitive varsity basketball program at its. current standard of excellence. With the exception of the last meet, all team members finished in one of the top four places in their individual events, 'lost of the team members managed to win four or five ribbons during the season (the exception was Dean Young, who lost i wrestling match with a horse early in the season and was unable to compete). Hopefully there will be more interest in track next year and the Austin team will be able to turn in an even better perfor- nance than it did this year. The High School Track Team consisted of the following members: Tendra Adkins Freshman Tonya Campbell Senior Bobby Helming Junior Lauren Lani Freshman Stephen Lani Junior Tasha Mock Senior Joey Ramos Junior Alex Rose Senior Charlie Rose Senior Bridey Thelen Sophomore Julie Thompson Senior The High School team competed in 2 track meets and then went to the State Track meet in Eureka.
