Good Times and Memories of 1982-83 Austin School P.O. Box 160 Austin, Nevada 89310 Share the year's events one more time... Dedication The 1982-83 Castilleja Staff proudly dedicates this yearbook to the memory of Laurence Saralegui. Laurence Saralegui was born in Reno, Nevada on May 18, 1908, and first came to Austin in the early 1950's. He became a well-known and well-loved local resident during his 30 years here. Laurence worked on the Race Track Ranch (top left); he owned a bar-restaurant here and in Battle Mountain (top right); he was always active in ranching and cattle- raising (middle left). A family man, he raised three children, Barbara, Spencer and Paul (middle right), and was the grandfather of two (with grandson Tony bottom right). He coached and refereed for school games, and was always supportive of the young people of Austin. A memorial athletic scholarship fund has been established in his name. The people of Austin will always remember Laurence's young-at-heart attitude, and the special member he was of our town. 2 Principal's Message As a first year principal, I could not have asked for a nicer place to begin. The young people at Austin Schools are good people. They need some guidance to improve in some areas such as academics and I hope over the next few years we will make the necessary changes. I personally would like to take this chance to thank the young people of Austin Schools for a good year. 3 TWIN DAY SPRING '82 Winners: Kandi Cadwallader and Lisa Cirac 50's 60's DAY Winners: Ricky Banovich and Tonya Campbell CRAZY DAY (BOYS) Winners: Barb Davis Mike Lenox COWBOYS AND INDIANS DAY Winner: Stephanie Campbell CRAZY DAYS (GIRLS) Spirit Week was held the week of March 8,1982. Just before school started, we went to Wheeler Peak for a weekend, and hiked to the top, as well as going caving (opposite page, left and right pictures). The Science Fair this spring also brought out the scientist in several students (Sarah Rose, top left; Michelle Merrill, top right; David Mcknight, middle left; Ricky Banovich, middle right; Johnny Helming, bottom left). The goal of the club is to make science accessible to students, whether by bringing them to mountain tops and caves, or by letting them discover by doing their own projects. We are looking forward to a trip to San Francisco in the future, and hope to also do more camping and exploring during the summer and next year. 45 Yearbook Staff Top Row, Left to Right: Pauline Rusert, Zina Morgan, Sarah Rose, Mrs. Rusert, Advisor; Tina Rubert, Stephanie Campbell. I feel, though, that what they lacked in knowledge and size they made up for with enthusiasm and hard work. However, as far as teamwork, attitude and enjoyment, we have come a long way. We started and ended the season with 15 girls. These Fantastic Fifteen gave the season their best shot and should be proud of it! They worked hard and played hard the entire season. Though there were problems, I would not have traded this coaching opportunity for anything. It was a learning and especially rewarding experience for me. We did not go to state, but I learned to love and appreciate the unique personalities and abilities of each and every girl. Hooper was joined on the all-tournament team by Cindy McKnight and Kim Mock. In the chamionship tilt. Hooper, who hit on 8 of 14 field goal attempts, finished with a game high 20 points and 12 rebounds. Mock and Cammie Helming had 11 rebounds each in the championship effort. The Fillies, whose co-coaches are Richard Dugan and Jim Helming, finished the season with a 17-3 record. The 1982-83 basketball season was a banner year for the Fillies. Our team was comprised of both experience and inexperienced players. They quickly jelled as a team and exhibited a winning, never-quit spirit. It was this spirit that carried them through to a state championship title. For me it was a privilege to coach such a team. 67 Varsity Broncos Left to Right: Joe Ramos, Manager; Thomas Smith, Joe Stewart, Barry Collier, Art Steelman, Eric Merritt, Ches Merrill, Kelly Strain, Jimmy Helming, John Brady, Roger Hooper, Mike Lenox, David McKnight, Steve Zeller, Manager; Kneeling: Coach Blinn. 68 Thomas Smith Guard Will we win? The Broncos, who finished the season with a 14-6 record, led for most of the game, but fell victim to a fourth quarter charge by Nick Wilkinson and his Bulldog teammates. Austin led in the third quarter by as many as seven points, 3023 and 32-25, but then the Broncos failed to score for more than seven minutes and fell behind with 3V2 minutes remaining in the game. Barry Collier led the Austin shooters with 14 points, while Chester Merrill led the games rebounders with 18. McKnight On Tuesday, November 16, Gary Brown of the Division of Mine Inspection gave a presentation about the danger involved in exploring abandoned mines. There are approximately 20,000 abandoned mines in Nevada; many of these are near Austin. Warning signs of a dangerous mine are dead animals, rusty water, sulfate crusts and large vent lines. In some mines, danger may not be apparent, such as escaping gases. The Division of Mine Inspections urges you to stay away from these mines, since your chances of being rescued if you should fall in one are slim. Many curious people who only walk to the edge of an entrance to peek in may be injured when the edge gives in. Mr. Brown spoke of two boys riding motorcycles over a mine dump who fell in an unfilled area between dumps and were killed. The presentation lasted about 45 minutes, and was educational as well as interesting. On behalf of the school, we would like to thank Gary Brown for this presentation. - — from Hoofbeats, 10, December 17, 1982; Game Warden Visits School by Mrs. Rusert On Wednesday, December 15, Austin School classes were given a firsthand opportunity to inspect an eagle found by Mr. Pierson on the side of the road Tuesday when he drove to Battle Mountain for a school board meeting. Mr. Pierson brought the eagle to school, and contacted Walt Campbell, Austin's local game warden, to pick it up Mr. Campbell showed the eagle to all classes, and gave an informative lecture about eagles and the laws pertaining to them. Laws were enacted in the 1960's to protect eagles, hawks and owls from being killed for display or mounting purposes. It is illegal to kill any of these birds, or even to pick up dead ones on the roadside, for mounting or use of the feathers or other body parts. The penalty by law is $500 or six months in jail. The Indians are permitted to use eagle feathers for ceremonial purposes, and people will not be arrested for wearing an eagle feather in their hats, but possession of the whole animal is a punishable offense. The eagle found by Mr. Pierson was about six months old and had a wing span of over six feet. Mr. Campbell said full- grown eagles can have wing spans of up to eight feet, though the largest one he has ever handled was about 7'2 . The eagle weighed about 20 pounds, and had been dead about a week. If anyone finds dead or wounded birds, they should be reported and turned in to Mr. Campbell. Dead birds are burned or buried, and while it's unfortunate that we can't take advantage of the birds killed accidentally, the law does protect the birds from becoming endangered. 81 HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL as Sophomore Haunted House: All the spooks are supposed to be inside!
