itostm M9I1 School 1981-82 P. 0. Box 160, Austin, Nevada 89310 Dedication The Castilleja staff proudly dedicates the 1981-82 yearbook to the memory of Scott Boyd, member of the class of 1978. Do not stand by my grave and forever weep; I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and forever cry; I am not there; I did not die. While it was a disappointment to lose the championship game at the State Tour- nament, the Fillies can look back on this season with a great deal of pride. The team matured a lot towards the end of the season, for they started to play 35 “control” basketball. The season was filled with inexperienced and 60 young players, who will do better in the future. The team only had two 42 seniors, Tom Stewart and Craig Wallace, but will be returning next 48 year with eight lettermen. They show to be right in the middle of the 59 district championship race, and show a return to the state playoffs. 63 The team had some good performances from Barry Collier, who fin- 98 ished the season averaging 18.6 points per game, 58.4% from the 68 floor and 71.6% from the line. Tom Stewart led the Broncos with 171 32 rebounds, and also had the most steals. Craig Wallace was the most 74 improved player on the squad. 53 I enjoyed the never-die attitude and the total effort the team gave 79 me this season. The Fillies Volleyball team schedule was cancelled the week of January 18th for the remainder of their season due to problems which were not anticipated. One player became very ill and was hospitalized, and another had to quit the team, leaving an inade- quate number of players. The team regrets not being able to finish, and not having the opportunity to defend their 1980-81 championship title. It burned two canyons, Crow and Marshall, south of town, and also burned part of Veches Canyon. As it appeared near the “A” Over town, everyone realized we had a big problem. Helping fight the blaze were 27 federal and state forest fighters, townspeople, the BLM Nevada Division of Forestry, and the Lander County Sheriff’s Department. Three air tankers, 64 pumpers, three bulldozers and one helicopter were also used to gain control of the blaze. All joined forces and worked throughout the night until the fire was contained at 6:00 p.m. Saturday. The out-of-town crews stayed at the high school throughout the weekend to watch for hot spots remaining on the summit to flare up. The United States Forest Service estimated the blaze cost $100,000 to control. It jumped Highway 50 and burned all of Austin Summit and was brought under control about eight miles west of the Frontier Tavern. There was no reported loss of livestock, but the loss of wildlife was great, and plant life was also greatly affected. In this emergency, the people pulled together and showed their concern for the town. By almost losing it, we’ve come to realize how much Austin means to us. 87 Taumt Bun PLACES 1— Barry Collier, 1 hour, 56 minutes 2— Roger Hooper, 1 hour, 56 minutes 3— Johnny Helming, 1 hour, 58 minutes 4— Lisa Cirac, 2 hours, 5 minutes 5— Laurel Camarillo, 2 hours, 6 minutes 6— Roger Coffman, 2 hours, 9 minutes 7— Charlie Evans, 2 hours, 9 minutes 8— John Lenox, 2 hours, 17 minutes 9— Jimmy Helming, 2 hours, 17 minutes 10— David McKnight, 2 hours 18 minutes 11— Lee Williams, 2 hours, 21 minutes 12— Clay Dalluge, 2 hours, 25 minutes 13— Arlene Hooper, 2 hours, 26 minutes 14— Shawn Brown, 2 hours, 30 minutes 15— Charlie Rose, 2 hours, 30 minutes 16— Lisa Brown, 2 hours, 31 minutes 17— Rita Hooper, 2 hours, 32 minutes 18— Mike Lenox, 2 hours, 33 minutes 19— Christina Camarillo, 2 hours, 35 minutes 20— James Coffman, 2 hours, 35 minutes 21— Roy Mecham, 2 hours, 35 minutes 22— Willie Evans, 2 hours, 35 minutes 23— Ricky Banovich, 2 hours, 41 minutes 24— Juli Jung, 2 hours, 41 minutes 25— Kim Mock, 2 hours, 41 minutes, 3 seconds Right— Photo finish of Barry Collier and Roger Hooper trying for first place. Austin got a total of 27 inches of snow, and school came to a near standstill for most of the week until the buses were able to make it into town. The snow stayed on the ground for about a month, much to the enjoyment of all (except those who got their cars stuck!).
