CASTILL EJA 1980 we begin renewed INDIAN PAINTBRUSH Painted Leaves on Indian Lands — The fan-like bracts (i.e. the leaves directly under the blossom) on this herb look as if they have been dipped in scarlet paint. They are so bright and conspicuous that they obscure the flowers themselves; the latter are indeed unspectacular: tubular, green-yellow, up to an inch in length. The plant’s whole appearance is attractive and has inspired such additional names as scarlet painted cup and red Indian; somewhat on the violent side are terms like bloody warrior and nosebleed, and a more compromising local appellation is election posy. The name prairie fire refers to the plant’s bright brilliance. An annual or biennial, it raises its erect stem to a foot or two. The basal leaves grow in a rosette, the stem leaves alternate and are slightly toothed. Both stem and leaves are hairy. Like the false foxglove, it is a partial parasite and receives a portion of its nourishment from other plants, particularly from grass roots. It blossoms from spring to early summer in fields, meadows and grassy spots from Maine to Manitoba, south- ward through the Dakotas to Texas, and through Arkansas to North Carolina. The western species whose “painted” bracts are red, yellow, or red and yellow, often form brilliant patches on mountain meadows and prairies in a setting of towering rocks and snowy peaks. They are rarely higher than 20 inches. One lovely species has been adopted by Wyoming as its state flower. Castilleja coccinea.
