Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1971 volume:

Never as widely publicized as Virginia City, Austin had the same fantastic boom, with a population of 10,000 and millions in bullion pouring from her mills. Austin set the pace for most of Nevada and many Lander county incidents are mistakenly attributed to the Comstock area. The Reese River Navigation Company stock promotion was nationwide. Thousands of persons bought shares in a company to freight rich ores from mines to mill on barges floating down the Reese River. Little could they tell that the impressive river on the maps was (like most Nevada rivers) only a few inches deep! Austin was the childhood home of Emma Nevada and is the site of Stoke's Castle still reputedly an enigma of the desert. Austin was practically on the first pony express route across Nevada. It is still colorful and one of the most interesting places in cen- tral Nevada. AUSTIN HIGH SCHOOL Austin, Nevada 89310 1 DEDICATION The 1971 Staff of the CASTILLEJA proudly dedi- cates this yearbook to: Coach ROBERT WILLIAM RAGAR We wish to express our gratitude in this manner for the time, effort, and understanding Coach Ragar has given to the Austin School in the class- room and through the basketball and track teams. 2 Thomas Patrick Ragar, Prospective Coach I wonder what the wild west is like? Somebody toss me a rope. I'm almost there. The summit Isn't this Diana's Punchbowl? Austin, here I come. Girls' Volleyball Team Coach ANNUAL STAFF Standing: Mr. Norris, Richard Nalder, Ralph Young, Curtis Schmidtlein, Billy Brandt, Gary Bennett, Mike Rose, Valerie Schmidtlein, Jeri Dory. Seated: Lura Brown, Darla Winrod, Francine Gandolfo, Linda Rosson, Valerie Gandolfo Annual staff hard at work on the Castilleja? Standing Gary Bennett, Asst. Editor Business-Advertising Mr. Norris, Advisor Richard Nalder, Student Council Representative Seated Curtis Schmidtlein, Editor Darla Winrod, Asst. Editor Layout EDITOR’S MESSAGE Through the hard work of the Staff and the Advisor we have produced this yearbook. The problems encountered were many. Since the Austin School has no camera and the yearbook receives no stu- dent body subsidy, obtaining photographs and raising the necessary money was difficult. I personally wish to thank those people who were kind enough to advertise in our Castilleja and en- courage everyone to patronize them. Also, I would like to give special thanks to those members of the typing classes who spent many hours preparing letters. With the help of all these people we have been able to accomplish our goals. 5 'r STUDENT BODY OFFICERS Standing: Darla Winrod, Clerk of Elections; Jennifer Dory, Secretary-Treasurer. Seated: Gary Bennett, President; Billy Brandt, Vice President S.B.PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE This year we have made great progress in our Student Body and Student Council. The leaders elec- ted by the students to represent them in the Student Council have performed their duties well. Attitudes of awareness by schools throughout the state toward Austin have changed. The best exam- ple of this is the election of Austin as the Secretary School of the Northern Nevada Student Councils (NNSC) for the spring session meeting of next year. The learning atmosphere has improved as displayed with the work completed on the school and I feel that it will continue with the forthcoming improvements. With the influence of new teachers there has been an increase in the concern for the students. Aust- in has increased in nearly all levels of academics and athletics. I am glad that I have been associated with these teachers and students. What we do in school is an important factor in the rest of our lives and I have come to realize this. The size of this school is quite beneficial to the students in many ways, especially in the individual attention they receive. I would like to thank the teachers and students for making this year one of the best. 6 STUDENT COUNCIL Standing: Warren Woods, President, 8th Grade; Russell Todd, President, 7th Grade; Curtis Schmidtlein, President, 12th Grade; Billy Brandt, Student Body Vice-President; Gary Bennett, Stu- dent Body President.
