U diCtitUM The student body of Austin High School proudly dedicate this year's annual to the town of Austin. Today Austin, Nevada is primarily cattle country. This was not true 100 years ago. Late in the fall of 1862 after the discovery of silver ore, the township of Austin was founded. To the ill-informed, Austin was not the first town in the Reese River Valley. William Talcott has been credited as the discoverer of silver on the east side of Reese River Valley. When he was informed that his ore was of a good grade, he established a mining claim which he later called the Pony Ledge. This strike brought in many prospectors and the town ofCliftonwas founded. The hills that lay to the east of Clifton were explored and the town of Austin was founded. Exactly 100 years ago, Austin was a prosperous and growing community. It had 450 inhabitants and all the business establishments and conveniences that any community would require. The population of Austin has fluctuated from the previous 250 to over 8, 000 people. It has been said, so the story goes, that Austin at its peak was the most populated city in Nevada. It is still the county seat for Lander County. We, the student body of 1962 salute Austin on its first centennial. We are proud to be a part of this community, its heritage and traditions and hope that we can emulate the standards of integrity, honesty, self-sufficiency and brotherly love that have been a part of this community for the past century.
