Philip D. Smith, B.A., M.A. PRINCIPAL THIS YEAR OF I960 marks the beginning of a new decade, a period in which you, the graduates of Austin High School will be forming the patterns of the remainder of your lives. I know what ten years can mean, for exactly one decade ago, I, too, graduated from high school and faced the world. The past decade has seen many things that you will soon see: college, military service, a family and home, and the choice of a life's work. It has also heralded new advances in our civilization: the H-bomb, man's beginning of the conquest of space, the polio vacine, and the peaceful use of atomic power. Since civilization advances geometrically you will see even more rapid strides taken forward to make our world a better place in which to make your place. We know that here, during your school lives, we have not taught you all there is or all that you will need. This we can never do. If we knew all there was to know about such a simple thing as a blade of grass, the information on it, alone, would fill a whole library. What we have strived to do is to prepare you to learn even more, and if we have done this we are satisfied. Now it is up to you to add to the foundation which we have laid. As you do this and make your lives, remember to make them use- ful to your fellow man for, Freely ye received, freely give. 5
