' ,,.-'.,, '- .I s K JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1939, five freshmen entered the Austin High School. They were: Bob Schmidtlein, Irene Burton, Ralph King, Joe Dory, and Bobbie Burton. After the usual process of initiation, they settled down to school life with grim determination. On October 9, how- ever, they were joined by La Verne Hooper and on Novem- ber lb, by Darlene Phillips, making a total of seven in the class. Bob Schmidtlein was elected Class Representative and Joe Dory exhibited his skill by taking part in the school played played girls' Before play, nBolts and Nutsn. Bob, Ralph, and Joe on the Colts'Basketball Team and Bobbie Burton on the High School HBH Team Irene was on the basketball team and was great asset to them the year had elapsed La Verne had dropped out leaving Just six to complete the year Their sophomore year was begun with only five mem bers due to the fact that Bobbie Burton had failed to re enter school Ralph King was elected Class Represen tative to the Student Council, and all took part in the many school activities Just before the close of the first semester, Darlene left the class to become Mrs Jim Watt Shortly beiort the nd of the year Dorothy Hurst from Indiana had Joined the class making the total of five to end the year This year they are Juniors and upp rclassmen, too Joe Dory was elected Glas Represer+a'i and Irene Bur ton, Adv rtising Nan ger Ralph took an important part in the play, 'Flat Tires' and all h lped greatly in win ning the cup at the Elko Tournament on March 12 Dorothy Hurst did not re enter the class this year, so the year ends with only four members Bob Schmidtlein, Ralph King, Irene Burton, and Joe Dory - I . , . , I . The first game of the season was with Fernley. The Broncos couldn't get going and were handicapped, because it was the first game ever to be started for the Broncos by Jim Brown, Ralph King, and Bob Schmidt- lein. Fernley won by a score of 39 to 20. December 12. Battle Mountain at Austin. A Another defeat met the Broncos when the Longhorns played them on their own court. The Broncos played hard but were outmatched by the Longhorns. When the bell sounded, the score stood 53 to l9. December ll. Carlin at Austin. The Austin Broncos really played ball to win from the Carlin Railroaders with a score of 35 to 19 The Broncos used team work and proved to the spectators that they were sally going somewhere this year nuary Q Austin at Montello Austin traveled to honteflo only to be defeated by a score of ul to 17 The game was rough, and the Broncos lost Don and Bob Schmidtlein on fouls Januerv lO Austin at Dells The score l3 to 15 at the half in Nells' favor indicates what a close game was being played The third quarter stowed Austin in the lead by one point when the gun sounded the score was tied and the only thing to do was play an overtime period Nells won disappointing the Broncos January 17 Eureka at Au tin It looked at first as though the Broncos would beat the nureka Vandals Tie score at the end of the first half was ll to 8 In the second half the tide turned, leaving the Vandals winners of the game, by three points - . . A Half of the population of Austin turned out at Eureka to witness the victory of the Broncos over the Eureka Vandals. Captain Hammond made the winning basket in an over-time period, giving A. H. S. their first triumph against our dead rivals on their floor, to the score of 22 to 20. March Q. Austin and Montello at the Tournament. The Broncos clashed with the Montello Challen- gers for their first game at the tournament. The Broncos won the game by 12 points. Austin was ahead throughout the game. This left them to play the next night for the championship of the zone. March 1. Austin and Battle Mountain for Champs. The Broncos played a very good first hal , trail- ing Battle Mountain by only 8 points at the end of the second period The Longhorns got in the shooting mood and moved away from the Broncos The Broncos d1dn't win the game but brought home a pretty cup for HBH runners up Battle Mountain won by a score of L8 to lu March 12 Austin and Lund at the State Tournament There was great excitement when the Broncos went to Reno to the state tournament The first day the Broncos played Lund, but couldn't work through their tight deiense However, the trip was enjoyed by every one who went down with the team TO OUR COACH Through h rd work, our coach, Mr Joe Cullen, has developed a term which everybody is proud of he won more mes this ye r than any team that has played for the good old Austin High We made lots of records one of which w s being the first team to win g mes away from home Our thanks to our coach and his ten f ithful players . . . . 0 1 . - l V . He has a record as one of the highest scorers in the state during one basketball game. He has had a very successful year and is a three year letterman. Al has played forward for the past three years, two years on the main string and one year on the second string. The season looked very promising after the first game, so the girls looked forward to their next game. January 16. Austin at Fallon. A This game was very fast and exciting. Fallon was ahead by at least five points through most of the game. The score at the half was 16-9, and the final score was 25-20. Dorothy Isaac played excel- lently, tallying 13 points.
