Q. ,, CLASS HISTORY We, the class of 1949, are leaving Austin-Cate Academy to enter many different vocations in life. Our class was formed n e years ago when the seventh and eighth grades were added to the Academy. At that time, our class numbered thirteen students: Bette Ames, Edith Babb, Lois Beverly, Davld Dean, Mona Douglas, Dorothy Horan, Miriam Huse, Richard Johnson, Robert Johnson, Carolyn Scruton, Glenn Smith, Calvin Stiles, and Harold Yeaton. Before the year was over, Mona Douglas moved to Rochester and Lois Beverly left the following summer to live in Arizona. Our class was enlarged to sixteen students in the fall of 1944, our freshman year, by the enter- ing of Richard Marple, Robert Hodges Harry Dukette, Jean York, and Laurel Teasdale, making it the larg- est class in the high school. Although we had had a year's experience at the Academy, we were still pretty green, and our social contributions were fem one dance. But of course we performed well for the school at the freshman reception. Miriam Huse and Edith Babb were on the softball team, Bette Ames was a cheer leader, and Glenn Smith made quite a name for himself as catcher on the baseball team. 111 the girls in the class with the exception of Miriam Huse and Carolyn Scruton Joined the Tri-H1-Y club, and all the boys with the exception of Harry Dukette and Harold Yeaton Joined the H1-Y. A few of our bravest students took part in prize speaking. They were: Bette Ames, Richard Marple, Carolyn Scruton, and Glenn Smith. Our class officers were: president Robert Johnson, vice pres- ident Calvin Stiles, secretary Dorothy Horan, trea- surer, Glenn Smith. Laurel Teasdale and Harry Du- kette left when the year was half over. In the sum- mer the Navy called the twins, Robert and Richard Johnson, and Glenn Smith moved out of town. Our class had diminished by five. Our sophomore year proved to be quite a social season for the whole school, and we put on three dances. Carolyn Scruton was the only one in our class who took part in prize speaking that year. Edith Babb had the honor of being elected president u . v g K ,igb Ax . ,., -IH S--X WIA 1?- OE .gy 1, A vs!
