Q. ,, CLASS HISTORY We, the class of 1949, are leaving Austin-Cate Academy to enter many different vocations in life. Our class was formed n e years ago when the seventh and eighth grades were added to the Academy. At that time, our class numbered thirteen students: Bette Ames, Edith Babb, Lois Beverly, Davld Dean, Mona Douglas, Dorothy Horan, Miriam Huse, Richard Johnson, Robert Johnson, Carolyn Scruton, Glenn Smith, Calvin Stiles, and Harold Yeaton. Before the year was over, Mona Douglas moved to Rochester and Lois Beverly left the following summer to live in Arizona. Our class was enlarged to sixteen students in the fall of 1944, our freshman year, by the enter- ing of Richard Marple, Robert Hodges Harry Dukette, Jean York, and Laurel Teasdale, making it the larg- est class in the high school. Although we had had a year's experience at the Academy, we were still pretty green, and our social contributions were fem one dance. But of course we performed well for the school at the freshman reception. Miriam Huse and Edith Babb were on the softball team, Bette Ames was a cheer leader, and Glenn Smith made quite a name for himself as catcher on the baseball team. 111 the girls in the class with the exception of Miriam Huse and Carolyn Scruton Joined the Tri-H1-Y club, and all the boys with the exception of Harry Dukette and Harold Yeaton Joined the H1-Y. A few of our bravest students took part in prize speaking. They were: Bette Ames, Richard Marple, Carolyn Scruton, and Glenn Smith. Our class officers were: president Robert Johnson, vice pres- ident Calvin Stiles, secretary Dorothy Horan, trea- surer, Glenn Smith. Laurel Teasdale and Harry Du- kette left when the year was half over. In the sum- mer the Navy called the twins, Robert and Richard Johnson, and Glenn Smith moved out of town. Our class had diminished by five. Our sophomore year proved to be quite a social season for the whole school, and we put on three dances. Carolyn Scruton was the only one in our class who took part in prize speaking that year. Edith Babb had the honor of being elected president u . v g K ,igb Ax . ,., -IH S--X WIA 1?- OE .gy 1, A vs! ' g.j,fJ' They were: Bette Ames, Robert Hodges, and Richard 5:51 Marple. I ' E ' Our Junior year was a very prosperous one for ff, the whole school headed by the very able and en- f 4? thusiastic Mr. Brooks. He formed a glee club and I dramatic club and everyone Joined one or the other. ,iw f-I . All the Junior class Joined the glee club except K. is Edith Babb who Joined the dramatic club. There were b y ' only four boys ln the senior class that year so the '11 ' V - ' D Juniors and seniors went in together when one or '- . E the other put on a dance. -af Edith Babb was again elected president of the ui d Tri-H1-1 and Miriam Huse and Carolyn Scruton Joined 4 'a'1fQ j 5 with the rest of the new members. Harold Yeaton and Z Robert Jewell Joined the H1-Y. Edith Babb and Caro- , ,fs lyn Scruton were the Juniors taking part in prize- J' speaking. 4'-' n It Our class officers were as follows: president, - Edith Babb, vice-president, Jean York, secretary, Dorothy Horan, treasurer, David Dean. Robert Jewell ', Joined us in November, and when the year was half ,Q . - 1 9 Over, Jean York left. Last summer David Dean and ' Q M Dorothy Horan left us, so that when we entered our ,Q 1-'gl senior year there were only five of the original -f, 1 I class plus two others---Edith Babb, Miriam Huse, iw Carolyn Scruton, Calvin Stiles, Harold Yeaton, and gggiih Robert Jewell who ,joined us in our Junior year, and A - Carol Atwell who Joined us at the beginningof' our . senior year. f pl.. . 55:2-ag.: , Being the seniors, we had preference over the F' 'tif' other classes, so we chose to put on three dances, ' 54? the freshman reception, February dance, and the May ,f.f15X!?72ew 'ff dance. Edith Babb became 'one of the cheer leaders, fi? lam- and she took par-tin the sch' ol play. She also became Q J treasurer of the Tri-H1-Y and Carol Atwell became a member. It had been planned that the carnival would start January 30 at 7:00 P.M. with a basketball game at the Town Hall, but at the last moment, the game had to be postponed because of weather conditions. On the morning of January 31, it was still quite cold, but many of the students arrived to take part in the activities. The events began by sliding and toboganning on neighboring hills and skating on Scrrb ner's pond. At twelve o'clock everyone went to the Town Hall to eat box lunches. In the afternoon the temperature had risen a few degrees and many of the other students came to take part in the afternoon and evening events. The afternoon program included snowshoelng, ski- ing, and skating contests. That proved to many of us that Austin-Cate has real talent. The first prize in snowshoeing was taken by Carolyn Foss of the freshman class, and, first prize in skating by Donald Yeaton also a freshman. The skiing was very good. The first prize in downhill skiing went to a sophomore, Wesley French, for the boys' race and to Theresa Foss a Jun- ior, for the girls. The first prize in the slalom race went to Peter Brasse a sophomore, and second prize to Wesley French. The most interesting of the skiing events was jumping, with Wesley French taking first prize by a Jump of forty-eight feet and forty feet making a total of eighty-eight feet. In addition to the skiing contests, Mr. Uolby, our sports lnstruc- tor, gave us a demonstration of how an expert does it and Mr. Cohen showed us what courage can do. At six o'c1ock everyone went to Thomas Hall for a very tasty supper put on by the senior class. The evening program began by a movie, 'Winter Carn1val', followed b a dance in charge of the freshman class. Y At nine o'clock, the climax welcoming the king and the as queen and Richard Johnson the day were awarded to the queen. This was followed by king and queen and the prize- tinued until eleven thirty w of the carnival came by queen with Theresa Foss as king. The prizes of winners by the king and photographs taken of the winners. The dance con- th everyone having a gmd - 1 s time at the first Austin-Cate carnival in many years. my up WINTER CARNIVAL ..
