Page Sixty-four A f XJAKEN PORTRAIT OF A DREAMER A tiny room with enormous west windows looking out on smoky mountains. An old violin whose mellow voice completely fills the room. A young man with dreamy eyes playing an ancient love song. A11 old story and an eternal combin- ation. Dreams. youth and music. Who can understand the dreams that are in his eyes and heart, dreams as misty and silent as the distant cloud-topped moun- tains? No one, save himself, for he interprets them with his fingers, and his violin chants, for him the song that throbs in his heart. And no one, save himself can understand the wil-o-the-wisp-like dreams that wander into his eyes and then in a moment, are gone. It is impossible to fathom his moods, for they steal into his eyes and into the song of his violin, and flit away, like phantoms in the night. Ghost pictures of the character of a dreamer are these dreams that drift on and on with the strains from an old violin. Anna Lee Roberts THE BEAUTY OF KINDNESS Kindness is generally used to designate the little deeds of thoughtfulness and gentleness. One may live many years and never have the opportunity of doing anything great, anything which calls attention to itself: yet through all 0ne's years, one may be kind, filling every day with gentle thoughtfulness, helpful sympathy, services of interest, and small courtesies. Kindness is beautiful in its simplicity. It comes from the heart. There is no self-seeking in it, no doing something for the effect, no desire for praise, no thought of reward. It is done in simplicity, prompted by love. Those who consider life dreary and commonplace should see the splendor that is veiled in the simplest kindnesses. Willene Cline REFORM I have made a pattern for my days, In careful rhythm staid and slow-A I've laid aside my careless ways, And yet how will I know That I can't hold my own When sun and moon are blown Again in slanted rays . . . I've taken up convention's ways, Respectability is now my part- Devoid of romance all my days And peaceful now my heart- And I'll forget as soon As April smiles her moon On silvcred cherry sprays . . . Elizabeth Wood SMOKE The smoke rises above the horizon and fades away like memories rising from the coals of deeds. As it fades, it leaves traces as lovely as memory's treasures that gleam and glitter in our hearts. Yet to some the spirals of dead dreams are a hideous blot against the clear, blue sky that can not be wiped out. But still smoke rises above the horizon as lovely as memories, Grace E. Gardner Page Sixty-five Km CAT, NAPS Sonny, called an insistent voice. Breakfast! 'Well! I murmured drowsily. As I turned over again, I reflect- ed that mother's voice could always intrude at the most incon- venient times. I yawned mightily. I was S0 sleepy, I I seemed still asleep as I slowly rose and fumblingly dressed. Breakfast had never been so unappetizing. Even before I finished, I realized that I hadn't written that English theme that was due first period. My pen was dry and I couldn't find the ink. Well I knew the agonies that came to the luckless student who presented a theme written in pencil! My history notebook-it was due today. But where was it? Oh, there! But the map-alas, my carefully drawn map had somehow received a baptism and Europe was weeping Script tears all over Africa. A few hasty passes here and there and a few scattered attempts to remedy matters helped not at all. Harkl the Franklin bell! I must be gone. As I rushed off, I realized that my socks didn't match my shirt and that I wore no tie. Oh, welll As I neared the building my chum appeared. Salvation! He had an extra map. We sat down at the curb to put the map in my notebook. Dimly I was aware that some figures had appearel on the steps, and that music was floating Out through the morning- The strain sounded much like To the Colors. I realized that I must hurry if I got to class on time. Suddenly a stern figure appeared. Was that the principal? Now I'd get it for failing to stand at attention when the flag was raised. Haven't I told you-, began the voice. But it wasn't a man's voice. My mother dashed some cold water in my face as she con- tinued, Haven't I told you to get up when I call you? If you don't hurry your cat naps will get you into trouble. Now scraml And did I scram? Homer Keith Page Sixty-six A MOST EMBARRASSING EXPERIENCE It was a beautiful day, that fatal day in midwinter. when I made my appearance at the magnificent St. Luke's church for the mornimz service. My costume, I felt, was a masterpiece. I was at- tired in a suit of grey with trimmings of blue fox fur. My hat was perched on one side and a jaunty, gay feather was perked at just the right angle. The violets, an extravagance in which I rarely in- dulged, added a last touch to my costume. I must confess that my thoughts wandered from the words of the learned minister that morning. I was rudely awakened from my reverie as I heard these words: Solomon in all his glory wns not arrayed like one of these. To my guilty mind these words were directed directly at me. I blushed and looked furtively around me to see if every other worshiper in the church was not looking at me. Finally the service was over, and in order to soothe my wounded spirits I decided to make a grand exit. I sailed out with all the dignity of my English ancestors. All went well until I reached the steps. There as I placed my foot upon a treacherous bit of ice, I astonished the spectators by waving my arms wildly in the air in an unsuccessful attempt to regain my equilibrium. I sat down, rather unceremoniously, and began my downward descent. I was an astonishingly short time in reaching the bottom, when one con- siders the fact that I hit every step on the way down. Since there was a slight incline from the steps to the walk, my speed was scarcely slackened until I gracefully came to a halt in the middle of that walk. It: seemed to me that providence might have been kind enough to have sent a good looking young man to my rescue: hut alas! it was a venerable old gentleman supporting himself with a cane. I arose, still clutching purse and gloves in one hand, with my hat on just the opposite side, to what it should have been, and Zlanced up the trail I had descended. Instead of my violets being on my coat they were strewn along the steps marking my dissrraceful exit. I made my wny homeward feeling rather chastened and firmly resolved that after that when attending church I should think less of my personal appearance and more of my prayers.
