WNW GUN LINE IV CCRP AULT returned to Subic Bay on 1 May for six days of upkeep. On 7 May, AULT was again underway this time for Naval Gunfire Support Operations, the gunline , in the Third and Fourth Corps area of South Vietnam. For the next three weeks, AULT supported U.S. and Republic of Vietnam troops with her six five-inch guns. Firing round- the-clock, her guns responded to requests of air spotters during the day and to calls for illumination and H 81 I iHar- rassing and Interdictionb fire at night. The only destroyer available in both corps, AULT was responsible for the area from the mouths of the Mekong River in the Fourth Corps area to Vung Tau and Han Tan in the Third Corps. On occasion in the currents of the shallow delta area, the ship had to anchor in order to hold her position with as little as two feet of water beneath her sonar dome and screws. AULT would twist with engines and rudder to bring her guns to bear on Viet Cong positions ashore.
