I . K , , ff ,W -1-br ig! Q.. USS AULT, a Sumner Class Destroyer commissioned in May 1944, was named in honor of Commander William Bowen Ault. Commander Ault, a naval aviator, was killed while leading his attacking squadron against the enemy at the Battle of the Coral Sea. I I After completing sea trials, AULT sailed for Pearl Harbor via Panama and San Diego enroute to the bat- tle area of the Pacific. She joined Admiral McCain's Fast Carrier Task Force Thirty-Eight at Ulithi, Decem- ber 28, 1944 and participated in strikes against Luzon and Formosa Q3-9 January 19455. The Task Force then slwepjt through the South China Sea, with AULT in the vanguard, in a successful attempt to wrest control from e apanese. USS AULT provided support for the Iwo Jima Campaign C19 February - 4 March 19459 and the attack on Okinawa as well as participated in the final strikes against the Japanese mainland. The effort of protecting our carriers at this time of kamikazes and Divine Wind operations on the part of the Japanese was pro- digious. The destroyer was there to protect the carriers and battleships, and protect she did. AULT was operating off the Japanese Coast when Japan capitulated 15 August 1945. She entered Tokyo Bay'2 September 1945 and participated in the signing of the Japanese surrender and remained in Japanese waters until 31 December 1945. Boston was her destination as AULT returned to the United States after an arduous year in the Pacific Theater. After completing overhaul, AULT sailed to New Orleans as a school ship for Naval Reserve per- sonnel. AULT was placed in the Inactive Reserve Fleet in May 1950. With the outbreak of the Korean War she returned to active duty and spent the latter part of 1951 operat- ing in Mediterranean waters. Following exercise and training cruises to the Caribbean, AULT and other units of Destroyer Division 222, departed Norfolk on a round-the-world cruise that lasted just short of a year. AULT transited the Panama Canal, crossed the Pacific and the Indian oceans, and sailed with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea as she worked her way around the globe. Following her return to Norfolk. AULT participated in exercises in the Atlantic with units of U.S Second Fleet. On one of her deployments, she became one of the first U.S. warships to sail into the Black Sea. The years passed as USS AULT performed the tedious tasks required of the versatile destroyer. In 1962 AULT entered the yards in Boston to receive extensive overhaul-known in the Navy as Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization. Designed to extend the life of the destroyer by eight years, the overhaul effected substantial expansion and modernization to meet the challenge of newer and faster enemy submarines. After participating in the Middie Cruise the summer of 1963, AULT went to Norfolk to take on her DASH fDrone Anti-Submarine Helicopterl. One of the Navy's newest weapons systems, DASH enables the de- stroyer to reach out even farther in our continued effort to perfect anti-submarine warfare for the defense of the nation. AULT was the first destroyer to carry the drones to Europe early in 1964. t ' Returning to Mayport, AULT operated with U.S. Atlantic Fleet for the remainder of 1964. Operations in Key West and hurricane dodging from Mayport highlighted the closing months of the year. . I During 1965 AULT won the Destroyer Squadron Fourteen Battle Efficiency Award. In addition she was presented with Battle Efficiency Awards for both the Operations Department and the Weapons Department. ,,...l..- N 0 FICER CDR Robert E. Brady, USN l Commander Robert E.
