CD T -69 ) Commander Wilfred G. CHARTIER, USN was born August 21, 1919, in Manistique, Michigan, and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred J. CHARTIER of San Diego, California. While attending St. Norbert ' s College, DePere, Wisconsin, CDR CHARTIER en- listed in the Naval Reserve and was ordered to active duty in April 1941. CDR CHARTIER saw action while serving on the USS ARCTIC (AF-7) at Pearl Har- bor and the USS ZEILIN (APA-3) during assaults on Guadalcanal and Attu. The USS ZEILIN was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for its participation in the operations against Attu, Aleutian Islands. In 1943. while a yeoman first class, CDR CHARTIER was commissioned an Ensign in the unrestricted line. CDR CHARTIER saw service aboard the Navy ' s first LSMR at Okinawa, where he was awarded the Bronze Star with combat clasp. The ship, LSMR- 193. received the Presidential Unit Citation. In May 1947 CDR CHARTIER was commissioned in the Regular Navy. He served aboard the USS CIMARRON (AO-22) and the USS RICHARD B. ANDERSON (DD-786) be- fore being transferred to shore duty at the Fleet Training Group San Diego, California. After completion of the five term program at Marquette University and General Line School, CDR CHARTIER reported aboard the USS DUNCAN (DDR-874) as Executive Officer in March 1954. He was promoted to LCDR on 1 August 1954 and assumed command of the USS MARSH (DE-699) on 16 July 1955. In 1958 CDR CHARTIER was transferred to the staff of the Commander in Chief Allied Forces Southern Europe in Naples, Italy. He was promoted to CDR on 1 July 1959 and assumed command of the USS AULT (DD-698) on 5 August 1959. CDR CHARTIER is married to the former Elayne Rita KAAP.and has two children; Randy, seventeen, and Antoinette, six. They live at 135 Glen Road, Lynnhaven, Virginia.
