TOWARDS NEW HORIZONS As the 1982-83 school year comes to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the Journalism class for the Herculean effort they have put forth in producing the 1983 annual. Though faced with the financial liability of the Class of 82’s annual debt and realization that they had to pay that debt off before proceeding with producing their own annual this class would not be detoured. Their main objective was to produce an annual for the students of Augusta to have as a lasting momento of their high school years and they succeeded. I sincerely compliment their advisor, Sharyl Allen, and her staff without whom the class of 1983 would not have this annual as a testimonial to their academic, athletic, and activity successes at Augusta High School. R.A. Price Superintendent 1983 DEDICATION The Yearbook Staff of 1982-83 dedicates this annual to the parents, Community, and students who worked so hard to make this yearbook possible! The class of 1983 has gathered at the good ole partying place (Scott Steinbach's house) to start celebrations for their 20 year reunion. Things are much cleaner at the house now. Scott’s mother has just finished cleaning it from the 1983 graduation party. Strolling to the back of the house, we find many of our old classmates on Scott’s waterbed waiting for Mr. Wilson to bring the alcholic beverages from his well known house of ill repute. While waiting, we start discussing the lives of our classmates. Since we are meeting at Scott’s, his name pops up first. Father Steinbach, Thank God he finally found the way. is now a reformed alcholic and a priest at the Oasis Bar in Wolf Creek. He no longer complains about how much money people donate for parties and has donated his van to the Hippie Foundation Speaking of vans, the conversation turns to Matt Anderson, who is now a dedicated Mormon. He desperately needs a van to haul all of his kids to the Mormon Church on Sunday. Catching the tail end of another conversation, it seems Karen turned down the pope’s offer to paint the ceiling of the Sistine chapel for a more exciting job. She is now painting porno pictures for Playgirl Magazine. Suddenly, the conversations are interrupted by a loud racket from outside. Rushing out, we breathe a sigh of relief as we recognize Mr. Wilson arriving in his latest toy. a 1921 dune buggy. Mr. Wilson, with the aid of two girls carefully gets out of the buggy and greets everyone with his crafty smile. We know he’s up to something. Getting closer, we find that he not only brought alcohol, but also bunnies. He figured that the party might get a little dull later on and the girls would entertain; for a price. Loren seems to be most interested in these girls. Upon further inquiry, we find out why. When Hugh Heffner’s Playboy Empire fell, Loren jumped in with both boots and started a new empire called The Cowboy’s Dream. He now picks the Cowgirl of the month for his magazine and lets them come stay at his headquarters, the Boadle Ranch which he inherited. Strolling around the house again, we are totally amazed by Lisa Mergenthal. She is going around checking |he hearts on all of the guys. Questioning her on what she is doing, it turns out that Lisa has opened her own heart rehabilitation center for women like herself, who have had their hearts broken many times. Lisa told us that her rehabilitation center is located right by the Teton Ski Resort because this is where she got her heart broken so many times. Since in the past, wherever Lisa was, Mona was always close by, we searched the crowd for her. Lisa told us after we could not find Mona anywhere that Mona didn’t make it to the reunion. But Lisa gave us all of the details on Mona's life now. Mona’s lifelong dream finally came true. She has her own race track. Equipped fully, no horses yet but lots of jockeys. Mona was just too tied up with all of her equipment to make the happy gathering. Our attention is caught by four people fighting over in the corner. Rushing over for a ringside view, we recognize our good buddies Bob Swanson, Charlie Taylor, Mike Malatare and Mark Williams. Charlie and Bob who have both become famous gun and knife collectors are arguing over who has the best collection. Mark and Mike are fighting about which branch of the military has the best looking girls. It seems that they have both become quite the Casanovas since joining the military. Now everyone but us are getting in on the fight. We manage to sneak outside while the getting is good. What!! Fights out here too. We seem to have trouble telling who it is. The size alone finally helps us figure out that one must be John Amestoy. The moon shining on the other’s head helps us figure out that it must be Brady. Short a little hair since high school. It seems that these two are arguing about who got the best athletic scholarship after leaving high school. John screams that his football scholarship was by far the best playing minor league football in Deer Lodge but Brady hollors back that there is no way playing with a bunch of cons best his basketball scholarship with the Boulder Brains. Brady went to Boulder instead of to the School of Mines at Butte. He said that Boulder offer was just too great to turn down. Now both John and Brady are coaches in Warm Springs. We can’t say who got the best scholarship, but we know from the conver- sation that they are both where they should be. What was that streak out of the door of the house?? Doing a double take we see that Roger Johnson has just snuck out the door with Brady’s wife while Brady was busy fighting with John. Roger has finally gotten his chance to take LeAnn away from Brady. After all of these years of writing to her from all the different parts of the world where Roger has been working as a spy for the government, he has finally convinced LeAnn that traveling around the world is much more excit- ing than Warm Springs. All of those years of pursuing have finally paid off for Roger. Mr. Wilson’s honies have broken up the fights and everyone has settled back on the waterbed. What is that thing that keeps poking me in the back? Moving slightly I can hear a moan. Getting up I find that I have been laying on Jon Wearley. He is complaining because everyone keeps laying on him. I explain to him that it’s an accident because I couldn’t see him since he sinks out of sight on the bed. But now that I have gotten hold of him, I ask Jon what he has done the past 20 years. It seems that Jon has made his million off of an invention. He devel- oped a device that lets short people see over the steering wheel and at the same time reach the pedals. Jon said that at first he invented it just for his own use and then since it worked so well patented and market ed it for the short people of the world and well the rest of the story is just history. Speaking of money, someone over on the corner of the bed caught our eye flashing that 10 carat diamond ring. Looking close we recognize Neal Anderson Neal is telling all of the girls how he could do wonders for their faces. He is now a plastic surgeon. His specialty is scars, but he is convincing Mr Wilson's girls that he could make them look better than E.T. Neal is now telling of his passion. Wrecking cars. It caused him to find a hobby where he could do it and make money. He is now a demolition driver in his spare time. Another conversation catches our ear as we hear Neal’s name mentioned. It’s his nurse who he brought with him wooing Mr. Wilson It seems that Neal isn’t as rich as everyone believes because he has to spend most of his time covering his own scars from wrecking cars. What is that racket at the door? We guessed. There was only one person in high school who made that kind of noise. Father Scott drags himself away from three of Mr. Wilson’s honies who he is converting to answer the door. He comes back with none other than Chris Stankewich Well better late than never Chris. Chris now a mad scientist trying to find a concoction to straighten his hair. He still hasn’t succeeded but he is making progress. He proudly shows everyone that one hair that he has straightened and framed. We seem to have missed someone. Of course, Mr. Heartbreak John son. Curt is found over in a corner with one of Mr. Wilson’s honies telling her that she is really beautiful but well he just doesn’t go in for that kind of thing because he is a one-woman man He’s still looking for that one woman Well keep looking Curt, we know that sooner or later she’ll find you!!!!! Things have quieted down. Looking at our watches we are amazed to see that it is 5 a.m. Everyone is dragging themselves to their cars to go back to their little corners in the world. With the last word of the reunion, Mr. Wilson tells everyone that if they don’t change their ways We all turn to him and say, “WE’VE HEARD THIS BEFORE!! ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO!!!’’ As everyone continues to their cars, we hear Scott preaching to us about how we should all join in and help him clean the house since he is expecting the pope later in the day and he won’t get the job as Cardinal if he doesn’t get the place respectful. Well so long Scott until our 40th reunion. The Yearbook Staff of 1983 would like to give a special thanks to Ralph Bidwell Tona Blake for all of the aid in the photography department. Of course we won, whal'd you expect? CLASS WILL CLASS OF “83” HISTORY In the fall of 1980, 23 slaves joined together at AHS to face the first four years of service. The Head slave was Neal Anderson, Neal’s right hand man was Charlie Taylor, Lisa Merganthal kept records and funds. Jenny Slanger voiced our small opinions. The overseer was Gary Betcher, who stood guard with his whip and gun at all times. The slave candidates of the year were Lisa Merganthal and Loren Boadle. We lost Glenna Fryberger, Stephanie Heldreth, Jody Fasset, Brian Triplet, and Barbie and Cal Miller. They transfered to another plantation. 1981 brought in other plantation workers, they were Jim Luciano, Tammy Mulhiem, Debbie Dean, Buddie Jackson, Chris Stankewich, and Wendy LaRoque. The new work leaders were Kevin Grantier, Buddie Jackson, and Lisa Merganthal. Our new overseer was Cal Wearley who helped us build our winning float, entitled “Elks Preach About Cardinal Sins”. Wendy LaRoque and Charles Taylor were slave candidates. Debbie Dean, Jim Luciano, Tammy Mulheim, and Jenny Slanger deserted us, and Buddie Jackson was sold at the end of the year, along with Lee Wright. Our third year brought in Theresa Wilson, Sheila Abele, Kim Temple- ton, Eric Rubenik, Mona Whitmore, Kent Wright (who also claimed to he a senior), and Jenny Slanger was brought back after her escape Karen Weikum was brought in later on in the year. The new slave workers for this year Jon Wearley, Kent Wright (who took over position as head worker, and then resigned because he couldn’t handle the slaves) and Wendy LaRoque. There were two overseers brought in to keep charge of us, they were Cliff Wilson and Katherine Hamilton. The slave candidates for this year, were Brady Dunning and Kim Templeton. During the year Theresa Wilson, Sheila Abele, and Jenny Slanger escaped But towards the end of the year there was an idea brought about to build another plantation in Lincoln, the idea was a good one, and the work on the new plantation began for the following year. Mark Biresch, Wendy Laroque, Kim Templeton, and Mona Whitmore were recruited to the Lincoln plantation. Neal Anderson had the obligation to go the new plantation or stay at AHS. He proved to be a very wise person and stayed to finish his 4 year sentence at AHS. Stepping into our last year there were no new slaves brought in. Our head worker for our final year was Brady Dunning, and Loren Boadle was chosen to be his right hand man. Lisa Mergenthal was again appointed the job of keeping track of the records and funds. We again had two overseers to take charge of us, they were Cliff Wilson and Nora McCarthy. The Slave candidates for our final year were Bobby Swanson and Lisa Mergenthal, who were also picked as King and Queen. Kevin Grantier joined our plantation because he wasn’t accepted to the Great Falls plantation But he didn't last long at AHS, and was later sent to the Lincoln plantation. The war ended on May 16, 1983 and the slaves were all freed. Good luck slaves. CLASS HISTORY CLASS WILL OF 1983.
