SENIOR CLASS HISTOR Y The year was 1974: the port of entry was Augusta High School when aboard walked 42 wide-eyed, sea-sick freshmen making up one of the largest classes in Augusta’s history. To start the year off right, Lori Shoemaker was given the rank of captain of the ship with Debbie Lame as her first-mate. Keeper of the journals and log was Linda Jackson and Mr. Roos was aboard to plug the holes and keep the ship afloat. Back on land, Frank Witt was elected to represent the crew members on the student council. When the homecoming festivities were over, Lori Shoemaker had been crowned princess and her escort was Kurt Streeter. Words alone cannot describe our float entitled, “Beauty Socks Beast,” except that it didn't place. Those who joined the crew were Dave Abele, Paul LaFromboise, Carla Booth, and Lenor Lchrkamp. All jumped overboard except Dave Abele. Others who left us included Valerie Burgess, Debbie Hall. Sandy Jackson. Ginny Marty, Barb Hammer, and Pam West. Tired of life as sailors, the class decided to travel by land once again. So our sophomore year took off on the right track as Frank Witt was elected to the position of engineer of the 78 or Bust Railroad Company. Chelly Reesman was his conductor, Richard Halverson kept the books on ticket sales and Linda Jackson took care of customer relations. Debbie Lame was the public relations manager and represented the company on the student council. The manager of our business was Mr. Carter who helped to keep the train on the right track. During the year we proudly watched as Linda Jackson was elected Homecoming Queen with Shad Heckman as her escort. Our float was entitled, “The Elks Are Coming, and due to high winds, it was totally destroyed during the parade. A car wash was held as a money-making project, and Frank Witt was elected student council vice-president for the upcoming year. The train company gained Cindy Erickson, Evon Anderson, and lost Jeff Purdy, Bob Wison, Tim Wilson, Blaine Winderl. Brett Winderl, Kurt Streeter, and Tammy Tjaden. Now that we were upper classmen and only one year from the final step, we decided that it was time to get higher in the world. The class went into the air travel business and the year proved to be a successful one. With a years experience behind him, Frank Witt was appointed pilot and Lori Shoemaker was named co-pilot. Lorell Jenkins was head stewardess and was responsible for flight schedules while Richard Halverson once again ran the ticket sales. Working in the control tower was Mr. Rohnke who kept things running smoothly, and Mike Henry was our student council representative. Nancy Morgan was chosen Homecoming Queen with her escort being Dave Peterson. This year we put forth every effort to produce a float and it paid off because we came home with first-place honors with “Elks Don’t Need Nine Lives For a Victory. Our last major activity was the prom which was held April 2. Music was pro- vided by Relayer and the gym was decorated to the theme of “Live For Today with sunrise colors. In prepara- tion for our senior year. Jeff White was elected to lead the student body. Vice president was Jeff Kessler and Lvn McDonough was secretary-treasurer. As new passengers, we gained Jeff Kessler, Donna Harpole, Tony Wood, Brad Varland, Joan Vincent, and Craig Solberg. Those who parachuted out were Evon Anderson, Shad Heckman. Lorell Jenkins, Donna Harpole, Dave Orr, Chelly Reesman, and Rick Morris. Being seniors, we decided to reach for the stars. Therefore, we boarded a space shuttle which took us through a year of adventures which we will never forget. Chosen to maneuver the ship was Richard Halverson with Dave Abele as his right-hand man. Robot in charge of records was Nancy Morgan, and Lyn McDonough kept track of the valuable star dust accumulated. Susie Mergenthal was the student council representative and once again Mr. Rohnke was chosen as our fearless leader. During the football season at Homecoming, Susie Mergenthal was our queen candidate and Mike Henry was her escort and was elected the first Homecoming King in Augusta’s history. Winning was in our blood since we once again placed first with a float entitled “Elks Don't Back Off.” “Our Guest Are Ghosts was the title of the play which the seniors presented on March 21. At the junior prom, Jeff White was named king, Nancy Morgan — queen. Craig Solbert — prince, and princess was Lori Shoemaker May 12 was the date of the senior banquet which was held at the Seven-Up Ranch in Lincoln. Baccalaureate was May 21 in the Augusta Community Church and our commencement ceremonies were May 22. Frank Witt was valedictorian and Rich Halverson was salutatoriam Added to our motly crew were Jim Graham, Theresa Olivares, and Phil Johnson. Lost in space were Jim Graham, Dave Peterson, and Brent White. At last, after four years of traveling, 24 crew members had reached their destination. 27

CLASS WILL We, the mighty class of 1978 make this our last high school will and testimony, hoping that we can leave a little sunshine and happiness with the underclassmen of Augusta High School DAVE ABELE wills his guitar playing to Rohn Nelson. CINDY ERICKSON wills her love to read to Judy Jahnke and Tari King. LINDA ERICKSON wills her bedroom to Pam Sitch and her fifteen minutes in the bathroom every morning to Diana Sitch for whom thirty minutes doesn't seem to be enough. RICHARD HALVERSON wills his Enlgish grades to Steve Burke. MIKE HENRY wills his love for water to anyone who is crazy enough to take swimming lessons for him. PHIL JOHNSON wills his coolness, charisma, looks and magnificent physique to Buford and his cool body to all the girls of AHS. JEFF KESSLER wills what little singing ability he has to Tammy Sitch. FRANK WITT wills his secret parking places to his brother Dave because he is young and doesn’t know his way around too well yet and his dedication to the annual to next year’s annual staff. TONY WOOD wills his ability to not take a book home all year to Steve Burke. The class of ‘78’ as a whole like to will their memories and good times to the future upcoming senior classes because there are enough to go around. CLASS PROPHECY by Patti Purdy, junior For their Golden Anniversary, dueto their arthritic conditions, the class of 1978 met at the Cataract Falls Rest Home in the year 2028, The organizer of the gala affair was Frank Witt. Frank just arrived incognito (so Penny Jo wouldn't recognize him) from Washington, D.C., where he has just completed the spring planting of blue- bunch wheatgrass on the White House lawn. 28
