On September 6, 1950, four years ago, lo wide eyed, wise looking freshmen entered A. H. S. We went through the in- itiation of lipstick and shower baths with flying colors and settled down to our classes. We elected our class officers making David Flom, Presi- dent, Fern Paul, Vice-President, George Austin, Secretary, and Margaret McDonald, Treasurer. Nancy McLean and Margaret McDonald were two of the three cheerleaders elected. During the year, Kae Lee joined us making our class a total of seventeen. We made it through the first year losing three class- mates, Mary Bond, Dana Lou Dean, and Phyllis Olsen. We began our sophomore year on September A, 1951, losing two more classmates, David Flom and Alfred Wiseman and gain- ing Vondell Kennedy and Jim Moody. However, Jim didn't re- turn in the fall. We elected officers and they were George Austin, Presi- dent, Jim Lee, Vice-President, and Hosella Sangray, Secre- tary-Treasurer. Rosella left us during the year to get mar- ried, leaving us without a Secretary-Treasurer for the re- mainder of the year. Carol McGrath joined our class on January lu, l952, bringing it to a total of 13. Kae Lee, George Austin, and Donald Kelly were on the football team. George and Kae were also on the basketball team. They learned the ability to play ball under the supervision of Mr. Tuomi. The second of September in l952, we began our third year of high school with a total of ten classmates. Election of officers was held and Nancy McLean was elected President, Kae Lee, Vice-President, and Fern Paul, Secretary-Treasurer. Miss Murray was given the job of sponsor. Nancy and Betty were two of the cheerleaders elected for the year. Nancy was elected Vice-President of the Pep Club. George Austin and Kae Lee were co-captains of the foot- ball team under the supervision of Mr. Gall and Mr. Hane. George was also on the basketball team. I i U 1 1 1 1 l I F , Y i i O - 1 , We had a few scrambles over selecting a theme for the Junior-Senior Prom. The Theme WTulips and Heathern was chosen. The orchestra gave us a very nice compliment by saying that we had the nicest grandmarch they had ever seen. Tom Pings joined us on November lb, 1952, and brought our class to a total of ten. Fern Paul, Margaret McDonald, and Carol McGrath left us during the year and got married. The seniors of '53 elected George Austin as Ass't. Editor and Kae Lee as Ass't Business Manager of the Annual. To close our junior year Nancy was elected to represent Augusta at Girls' State and Bill Maphies and Tom Pings were elected to go to Boys' State. On September 2, 1953, six very intelligent looking pupils marched through the doors of A. H. S. for their last year in high school. George Austin had moved to Glasgow just before school started and could not be with us for our last year. Officers were elected as follows: Bill Maphies, Presi- dentg Betty Bean, Vice-President, Nancy McLean, Secretary- Treasurer. Mrs. Schmidt was made sponsor. Nancy and Betty were again chosen as cheerleaders for the year. Betty was elected President of the Pep Club. Betty and Nancy were elected co-editors of NThe Lariatn and Nancy was also elected editor of the Annual with all the other seniors on both staffs. Jim Lee left us after the first six weeks and we were all sorry to see him go. This left us only a class of five, of which Betty Bean was Valedictorian and Bill Maphies Salut- atorian. Baccalaureate was on May 23 and Graduation on May 26, both were held at the high school. The Senior Banquet was held on May 2h at the Blue Room of the Community Church. The seniors parents sponsored thisand the junior girls served. .31-nh BETTY BEAN Valedictorian President of Pep Club Cheerleader ---------- Vice-President ------- Pow Wow ------------------- Annual Staff ----------- --- Paper Staff ---------- Glee Club ------------ Pianist for Glee Club Phys. The peace and quiet was disrupted by a small gust of wind. As we sat there watch- ing the clouds go by, we counted them. There were five. As they came closer they reminded us of the five seniors of '54N. In the lead was a big beautiful cloud, which reminded us of Betty Bean. She seemed to speak telling us she was happily married and that she is living on a ranch in the Rocky Mountains. The next cloud reminded us of Kae Lee, who is a member of Notre Dame. He seemed to tell us he had fknshed anoth- er successful football season by scoring a total of 56 touchdowns. Stillness once more prevailed as we see Nancy McLean. She married a handsome cowpoke, who is owner of a vast number of oil wells. The imageof Bill Maphies seemed to appear in the fourth cloud. Bill is a reserved ent, who is the first of the class to gain a fortune. ?He lights his cigars with 55 bills.D Bill succeeded in crossing bees with grasshoppers and is now producing an ever-loving drink of Nhoneyjewn. The last cloud of our reminiscence floated by. It was the image of Tom Pings. Tom followed the footsteps of great rodeo performers and is now a famous western song artist. The clouds slowly went on their way. But they will be back bringing memories of our past schooldays and friend- ships. Members of the team of 1953-54 can justly feel proud of their season's work. Although they lost A games, they won two. The football year was a success from every point. The other teams of the conference play, found the Elks had a team that by no means was easy to score upon. Our team this year was, on the whole, inexperienced and lacking in confidence, nevertheless, they invariably displayed a stone-wall line and a plunging, hard hitting backfield. Gene is one of our mainstays and is a fast-break man. Gene is a very good de- fensive man where he plays at a forward posi- tion. Reg Wearley is a junior who stands 5'8N. Reg could be called ourfloor- general, as he is the man who sets up our plays and guards against fast- breaks. Reg's defensive play was very good along with a much-improved shooting-eye this year. Bob Bean is a sophomore standing 6'3'. Bob is probably the best de- fensive man we have. He plays center and has done a commendable job against all opposition. Ray Mills is a junior who stands at an even 6'. Ray plays both forward and guard. Ray is equally good on defense as well as offense. He has a variety of shots that are going to do us a great deal of good next year. Ray Phillips isa.junior who stands 6'. Ray plays outstandingly at the for- ward position and is one of our toughest men to guard. We are looking forward to have Ray back next year. Reg Wearley Ray Mills Coach Jack Hane John Girardi Mr. Gall Joe Bohler John Girardi is a freshman who stands 5'6'. John is J noted for his dribbling and shooting. He will be an asset to Augusta for the next three years. John plays guard. Joe Bohler is a sophomore who stands 6'l'. Joe is no doubt the most deceptive passer we have. He has a left- handed hook-shot that is almost impossible to stop. Don McBratney is a sophomore who stands 5'8'. Don is a good guard and has great speed. We will be looking for good play from him the next two years. Frank Morgan is a junior who stands 5'll'. Frank is one of our best fast-break men and is a good guard. Frank's shooting has improved greatly and will be a great help to us next year. Jim Allen is a junior who stands 6'. Jim has a jump-shot that is hard to stop. At the beginning of the year the class decided to choose teams. These teams were to participate in the different sports. So many points were to be given for each win during the year. No points were given for the games-lost. The team with the most points were to be awarded with a party given by the losers. Captains of the two teams were Betty Spinder and Nancy McLean.
