Freshman Class History On September Z, 1953, thirteen students enrolled as Freshmen at the Augusta High School. At first we were shy and unaccustomed to the habits of high school, but after we were duly initiated by our dear friends the Sophomores, we felt we were a part of the Augusta High School. The Sophomores subjected us to many hardships on the day of our initiation. We felt we were forced to wear clothes that were not proper attire for school, since the boys came to school dressed in girls' shorts and long black stockings. The poor Freshmen girls came dressed in their nightgowns, and they were very attractive with their hair in pigtails with different vegetables tied on each one. We thought that the Sophomores were just being kind to us when they gave us a delicious chocolate pie to eat, but since they forgot to furnish forks, it was a little messy eating them. During our lunch hour we were paraded through town to show our regalia and then roll a peanut up the street with our nose. On' the night of our initiation the Sophomores took us to an old de- serted house and while we were blindfolded they made us crawl through tires, and they gave us aid through the tires with an electric stockprod. They then gave us a delicious meal of buttermilk and cocoa powder. Next we were given a beauty treatment by having eggs, followed by cornflake s, rubbed on our face. After walking throughpumpkinrinds and crawling through several more tires, our blindfolds were removed and we found out that we had all survived the ordeal. We were now fully initiated into high school, and the Sophomores then gave us a party to make up for all that they had done to us. We repaid the Sophomores for our initiation by giving them a party at school, Already in our first year in high school, several of our class have made a name for themselves in the activities of our school. The students taking part in softball and basketball are: Mary Welker, Peggy Kimner, Carol Stelzer, Rosalie Osthoff, Vincent Ruether, Morris Opfer, Carl Gravemann, and Harlow Gammon, In January we were glad to welcome into our class Floyd Beeson from Robertsville, Missouri, Ve have had a very successful year as Freshmen and hope our Soph- omore year will be just as enjoyable.
