N0 cane is so beautiful as the one grandfather wore smooth on a thousand walks. No chair so lovely as the one mother consecrated by many a night of rocking the baby. No table so priceless as that one where father used to write. No pipe so precious as the one he smoked. No dress so charming as the one worn by the little girl gone-gone forever into heaven or womanhood. It's the human touch that beautifies. Nothing can be warmly beautiful that is not or was not useful. And democracy is beautiful because it exists not for the glory of a ruling dynasty, but for the welfare of the people who compose it. We achieve true greatness only in SERVICE. WARREN MacLARDY. 12

Education for citizenship is an objective of secondary edu' cation which is related to all other aims. This objective was the idea foremost in the minds of the founders of public schools in America. The National Honor Society is based on the belief that those desirable citizenship qualities are best developed through motivated activity, experienced by students under as near lifeflike situations as possible. That the Honor Society is an agency for stimulating and motivating such activities is an undisputed fact. It provides incentive and recognition to students who have the abilitv and desire to do outstanding work in their studiesg who def sire to build character and purpose that will make them an influence for Hner and better living, and who wish to develop qualities of leadership and serviceg and which so doing to serve the school and contribute to the enrichment of school life. Activities of the National Honor Society not only conf tribute to the building of desirable citizenship traits in the school community, but also open the way for young people to participate in the social, economic, civic and political affairs of the community. My closing comment shall be a quotation from Henry Van Dyke: Four things a man must learn to do If he would make his record trueg To think without confusion clearly, To love his fellow-men sincerely, To act from honest motives purely And trust in God and heaven securely. 11 1 93 3 :S T I-I-I :S 4
