Initiation of the Audubon Branch of The National Honor Society May, 1940 5 BETTY BAIRD DORIS KEES EditorfinfChief Chief Business Manager Probably the proudest group of high school students ever seen was ours when we gathered together for the Hrst meeting of the 1941 yearbook staff. Our first work was to interview photographers fquite interesting, may we assure you?j. Then came the printers and engravers with rnyriads of layouts and Hgures that rattled like hail in our confused heads. When we finally chose the ones offering the most and best for the least, we were ready to select the theme. From what we've heard, it has always been a difficult task to select a theme for the yearbook. This time, too, we expected to have a few mental tusslesg but to our surprise and delight, we discovered the Audubon Charter Chapter of the National Honor Society quietly presenting itself for our instant approval, Thus the theme of Le Souvenir of 1941 came into existence. With the theme chosen, assignments were handed out and the various departments began their work. The photographer came and took portraits, group pictures, and candid camera shots. The business staff worked chiefly to earn money to keep the cost of the yearbook as low as possible for each senior. Members of the staif sold adverf tising space by contacting local and outfofftown businessmen. They also took charge of the sales campaign for underclass and alumni subscriptions, In conjunction with the editorial and business staffs, the art staif created the page illustrating in symbolical form the main events of our senior year and the cartoons in the advertising section of the book. With the main portion of our work completed, we chose the cover of the yearbook and had the name of each senior student printed on his own book in gold letters, Looking back on our work this year, we feel that we have done our best toward preparing for our schoolmates the type of yearbook they have been eagerly awaiting. 1 6 EDITORIAL STAFF Left ro right: J. The wider one's experience, the more thorough his study, the braver his heart, and the stronger his intelligence, the more willing he is to hear what you or any man may have to offer. Stuhbornness is usually the instinctive selffclefense of conf scious weakness. When one can do nothing to show his strength, he imitates the mule, the most despised of animals -sets his feet, lays hack his ears, and won't budge, Spinoza's maxim was that the two great banes of humanity are selffconceit and the laziness coming from selffconceit. 10 Education for citizenship is an objective of secondary edu' cation which is related to all other aims. This objective was the idea foremost in the minds of the founders of public schools in America. The National Honor Society is based on the belief that those desirable citizenship qualities are best developed through motivated activity, experienced by students under as near lifeflike situations as possible. That the Honor Society is an agency for stimulating and motivating such activities is an undisputed fact. It provides incentive and recognition to students who have the abilitv and desire to do outstanding work in their studiesg who def sire to build character and purpose that will make them an influence for Hner and better living, and who wish to develop qualities of leadership and serviceg and which so doing to serve the school and contribute to the enrichment of school life. Activities of the National Honor Society not only conf tribute to the building of desirable citizenship traits in the school community, but also open the way for young people to participate in the social, economic, civic and political affairs of the community. My closing comment shall be a quotation from Henry Van Dyke: Four things a man must learn to do If he would make his record trueg To think without confusion clearly, To love his fellow-men sincerely, To act from honest motives purely And trust in God and heaven securely. 11 1 93 3 :S T I-I-I :S 4 EUUCATIUN 0l BUARD Sitting left to right: Dr. Fidler, Messrs, W. No chair so lovely as the one mother consecrated by many a night of rocking the baby. No table so priceless as that one where father used to write. No pipe so precious as the one he smoked. No dress so charming as the one worn by the little girl gone-gone forever into heaven or womanhood. It's the human touch that beautifies. Nothing can be warmly beautiful that is not or was not useful. And democracy is beautiful because it exists not for the glory of a ruling dynasty, but for the welfare of the people who compose it. AUDUBON FATHERS' ASSOCIATION Whenever possible, this organization supports the educational program of the Audubon schools. In order to add to the treasury of the Student Loan Fund, it presented in january a vaudeville show. A month later the Association indorsed the athletic rally to arouse football spirit. The High School ParentfTeachers' Association ever welcomes the opportunity to serve the administration and the faculty in its task of enriching the lives of pupils. This year it sponsored the Ursinus College Meister Singers as well as a number of teas for the mothers of students. Silring: Left to rightelwirs, R. Harmcr, Mr, P. Dare, Mrs. C Wirnig. We believe our Student Council is truly a democratic organization because every member of the school is represented either directly or indirectly. It has taken many years to make our country the world's greatest democracy, and likewise it has taken many years to reach the present development of our Student Council. We, the Council of 1940f41, are grateful to all preceding groups whose eiforts from year to year have been like the layers of brick in a rising wall. Not only have we endeavored to preserve this structure, but we have tried to strengthen it and build it higher. Only by carrying on the good work where others have left off can we ever hope to reach perfection. 18 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Early in the school year of 1933-39, the faculty, having been approached by Miss Kramer as to the organization of a chapter of the National Honor Society in Audubon High School, became enthusiastic over the idea. After M'ss Kramer received instructions from the National Councl at Chifago, she it to the National Council appointed a faculty committee to draw up a constitution and submit for approval. Soon Audubon High School was granted a charter and became one of the almost twentyfthree hundred chapters in the association. There followed the serious and delicate problem of electing students into the Society. The teachers were given a list of eligible students, whose eligibility was based on a scholarship attainment of 871611: or better. Then these students were rated on character, se.vice, and leadership charts. The faculty council studied these charts carefully and determined a composite score on the fourpoint scale of scholarship, character, service and leadership for each pupil. The individual composite scores were arranged on the basis of the number of teachers scoring a given indi- vidual and his percentage of average. 'l hose seniors who appeared in the upper twelve per cent of the senior eligibles and those juniors in the upper seven per cent of the junior eligibles were elected. Fir-ft Row, Lell lo Right: W. O WOOD BOUND SENIOR PLAY CHARLEY'S AUNT lack Chesney, Princeton under' grad, is in love with an avaricious old lawyer's beautiful ward, Kitty Verdun. His roommate, Charley Wykeham, is in a similar condition over Amy Spettigue, the lawyer, Stephen Spettigue's niece. To further their cause, a luncheon is planned, using the imminently arriving Donna Lucia d'Alvadorez of Brazil, Charley's Aunt, as a chaperon. But Donna Lucia suddenly can't come, leaving the two in a predicament. This problem is solved and results thereof are a dizzily complicated series of happen' ings and, of course, a happy ending.
