Employing teachers to do for students what these must eventually do for themselves, as the price of real education, is sheer waste both of funds and of educational opportunity. The process not only wastes the student's timeg it gives him a constant and impressive object lesson in false and specious education. All worthwhile learning results only through the efforts of the learner. ' W. L. Any young man with a streak of idleness in him may better make up his mind at the beginning that mediocrity will be his lot. Without immense, sustained effort, he will not climb high. And even though fortune or chance werevto lift him high, he would not stay there. For to keep at the top is harder almost than to get there. Live for something. Do good, and leave behind you a monument of virtue that the storms of time can never destroy. Write your name in kindness, love and mercy on the hearts of thousands you come in contact with year by year, and you will never be forgotten. Your name and good deeds will shine as the stars. We can n-e'er forget the debt we owe As from thy halls of fame we gog Time can not dim thy guiding start, Which first endeared thee to our heart. As we travel the road and strive for the best, Fighting life's battles and meeting the test, Memories drifting of classmates and friends Shall bring realization that here the best ends. All thanks to thee, our Audubon High! Our praises resound to heaven and sky, Dur hearts now are full, our song is complete, Our years spent with thee are triasures most sweet. DUROTHY E. Groping in the midst of new curricula and standing in awe of beginning so great a project-our high school experience! Many promising athletic stars were launched in training. This first lap marked the forming of new friendships and a feeling of responsibility. The Frosh were complimented on the way they sup- ported the activities of the then upper classmen. Whoever thought that this insignifif cant group would blossom forth into a record breaking class! Whoever dreamed that they would produce the best plays, the best actors, the best athletes, and most impor' tant of all, the best studentsg but as you read the following orations you will be con- vinced of these truths, so on to the ...... SECOND ORATION Some semblance of class orga-nization at last! The honors of leading this famous class were conferred on Harry Furey, Presidentg James Griffin, Vice Presidentg Dolores Rosenberger, Secretaryg Dorothy Tully, Corresponding Secretaryg and Ralph Prichard, Treasurer. With a false sense of importance, several ambitious boys fell to initiating their inferiors with a ducking under the drinking fou-ntain. They were soon ref strained, however, by a bit of information that the word Sophomore means foolishly wise. The gala social event of the year was the Sophomore party, which was a brilliant success. The wealth of the class increased each Duesday g for when we were Sophomores, our pockets were sufficiently filled to meet our debt requirements. It was with great satisfaction then, that we brought to a close this most precarious year and prepared for the ...... THIRD ORATION Now for our most successful year! As the junior Class of 1934, we figuratively went to town. The Hrst thing that we did was to again appoint officers. Harry Furey was elected President for the second timeg Harry Atkinson became Vice Presidentg Recording Secretary was Mary Hessg Dorothy Tully was selected to be Corresponding Secretary and to Arnold Mayers fell the important post of Treasurer. Under the capable guidance of these officers the class made history, financially and otherwise. Dances, movie benefits, and a sparkling three act comedy, The Odd job Man, con- ceded to be the best dramatic production yet offered by any class, all helped swell the treasury to record proportions. It was with hopeful and confident eyes that we looked forward to our senior year, nor could we be blamed for strutting just a little bit and looking down with haughty eyes upon the under classmen. 20 AUDUBON HIGH SCHOOL FOURTH ORATION September! And for the fourth and final time we assembled under one roof! A big year was before us and we immediately settled down to work. Ofhcers were elected for the third and last time. In recognition of his sterling services during the sophomore and junior years, Harry Furey was unanimously elected President. Howlett Moyer became Vice Presidentg Carolyn Earley took over the duties of Recording Secretaryg Marion Smith was appointed Corresponding Secretaryg and Everett Elwell fell heir to the duties of Treasurer. It was during this year that the historic juniorfSenior feud took place. For about two weeks the rival classes battled valiantly, but we more than held our own. Our Victory Dance received a stunning blow by reason of the totally unexpected reverse handed the football team by Haddon Heights. This was one of the real drawbacks to a successful year. Our class inaugurated an entirely new procedure in movie benefits. The plan, which engaged the services of the Mt. Ephraim and Ritz theatres on successive weeks, was a huge success and gave outfofftown students a fine chance to swell their personal funds. A big, busy, bustling yearg but all too short! Almost before we knew it, term papers were being hastily finished and preparations begun for the Washington trip-the outstanding event of our high school career. Who will ever forget it? Then-Graduation, the Hnal chapter in our scholastic memories! We will always remember the solemn services and impressive ceremonies, attended with all the wistful rejoicing so essentially a part of this fifnal leaveftaking. V., m AUDUBON HIGH SCHOOL Football As the curtain was rung down on the end of another interscholastic football sea' son, Audubon High School's powerful gridiron machine was again revealed as Group 3 Champions for the third consecutive year. Receiving opposition throughout the campaign from the strong Millville aggregation, the New jersey solons awarded the decision to Audubon by oneftenth of a point. The Audubon eleven this year was one of the most perfectly balanced ever to tread local greensward. There were a few outstanding stars who performed in such a cooperative fashion that they were thorns in the side of all opposing teams. Led by a beautiful passing attack and protected by a powerful defensive wall, the Green Wave was conquered only once, and tied twice. The team completed the longest schedule in its history, eleven games-a real tribute to the stamina of the men. Next year the team will be depleted of ten present players, Bob Atkinson, Blase Ravikio, Jim Griffin, Horace Barber, Bill Flynn, Howlett Moyer, Bill Heller, Pete Furey, and Bob Ramsey, all of whom will be graduated. Audubon also placed several men on the mythical South Jersey all-star teams. Ravikio and Flynn each gained guard and end positions respectively on the AllfSouth jersey eleven, while Bucky Lai earned a second team halfback berth. Let us briefly summarize the games. GLASSBORO-Audubon received little opposition from the Glassers in the opening game of the season, winning handily 24f13. PLEASANTVILLE-The Green Wave pulled the game out of the fire in the last minute of the play to keep its record intact, 13f7. MILLVILLE-Another tight squeeze! This time th: Pickenmen nosed out the Millers on a blocked kick. The score was 6fO. P. S. D.-The Pennsylvania School for the Deaf was the victim of our seventeenth consecutive victory, 13-0. A WOODBURY-Pre-game favorites to win, Woodbury's Thundering Herd came to Audubon set to avenge last season's stinging defeat but fell before an inspired Audubon eleven to the tune of l3'O. PALMYRA-Audubon's championship aggregation striving for its nineteenth straight win was momentarily halted by Palmyra, who held the locals to a 0fO dead' lock. Playing on a muddy field and before a small crowd, neither team could get its attack functioning. HADDONFELD-Audubon's mighty Green Wave continued its unbeaten streak after being momentarily halted the previous Saturday when they bowled over a highly touted Haddonfield eleven, 6-O. OCEAN CITY-Kept from piling a higher score by numerous bad breaks, Coach Picken's Little Giants scored their twentieth win over Coach Von Henriod's Clam' diggers by a 12f7 margin. MOORESTOWN-Again another team came to town touted to the skies and again they returned' on the short end of a 13f0 score. The Audubonites seemed to follow that timefhonored phrase the bigger they are, the harder they fall to perfec' tion as they completely out-classed the Burlington County team in the season's finest game. HADDON HEIGHTS-No team was a worse underdog than Haddon Heights on that fateful November Saturday and no team created more of a surprise than this same Heights aggregation when it out-fought a tiring Audubon eleven, 12'7. The strain of the long schedule was clearly evident in this fracas. BRIDGETON-Needing a tie or a win over Bridgeton to be sure of the Cham' pionship, the Green Wave succeeded in getting the former. Audubon completely outplayed the Cumberland County eleven, making several long marches down the field only to be stopped every time. The final was 0fO. Medford Lakes-Banquet-Audubon's famous victory banquet was celebrated in the Medford Lakes Log Cabin for the third straight year. Mr. Thomas Kenneally, a former Notre Dame quarterback and present coach at Rutgers, was the principal speaker. The Championship was celebrated by several hundred rabid Audubon rooters, who topped the fine evening's entertainment with many hours of dancing to the music of Norman Glenz and his orchestra. 69 1 1 lldllwym I LE SOUVENIR I . The team finished higher in the league standing than Audubon has ever done before, third place. Although five defeats were registered, Collingswood and Wcicidbury two afpiece, and Vineland one, each of these losses was hotly contested. Coach Picken molded an unexpectedly fine team around CofCaptains Bill Flynn and Howlett Moyer. The rest of the starting five consisted of center, Charley Myers, and guards, Bob Nesbit and Bill Ulrich. Of these five men only one will be back next year, Bill Ulrich. The team this year was just another basketball team at the start of the season, but it was soon evident that Audubon rated among the best in the league, a team with no particular bright stars but a smooth working, fine passing combination that was a thorn in the side of every opponent. Audubon was eliminated by Palmyra in the Hrst round at the state tournament. The L'Pals' height and ine eyes proved too much for the locals. SCHEDULE A. H. S. Opponent Jan. -Collingswood . . ......
