I l» M Another favorite winter quarter pastime is a trip to Montgomery to visit The Lamplitcr dinner theatre. There, good food and an amusing play join together for a very enjoyable evening. Many female students make the trip to Montgomery, Birmingham. Columbus, or Atlanta on weekends to get down to some serious simp-ping. Picking and choosing from the large selection of clothes and accessories available in the numerous stores in these cities is a welcome respite from the small selection of shops in the Auburn-Opclika area Other students use Winter weekends to visit nearby relatives and friends, or to check out the top groups in out of town concerts that Auburn can’t attract. Fraternity and Sorority formals also draw students out of town. Many sun bred students get their first taste of snow skiing by visiting Gatling-burg, Tennessee or other Appalachian resorts as a result of these formals. Some slope loving skiers make the long trek to North Carolina or Tennessee several times during the winter quarter to get the chance to speed «k wn the powdery paths.

Leaving it all Behind Getting away from it all. At times, the pressures of school can begin to overwhelm the Auburn Student, and the need to get away from the books becomes imperative. Luckily, there arc numerous ways for the Auburn student to separate himself from the rigors of midterms, term papers, and soon-to-bc-duc projects. Weekends arc tailor-made for putting away the books and visiting one of local escapes that arc as diverse as tlxr student body itself. Away football games claim many students. Groups of four to eight | eoj lc climb into someone's tempera-lettered van or station wagon, and don orange and blue cowboy hats, outfits, and other identifying items that they wouldn’t be caught dead wearing in Auburn. After the game. Auburn students visit the local panics and night spots around the foreign campus, and then sleepily drive home on Sunday afternoon, content in tin- knowledge that they chose the right college to attend, regardless of the outcome of the game. Before the chill of winter sets in. many students take to the woods to enjoy the beauty of the Southeastern forests. Fraternity pledge classes, ROTC cadets and wilderness skills students hit the pine trees in large numbers at places as close as Chewacla and as far away as Dahloga, Georgia. However, many smaller groups remember how much they enjoyed sitting around a campfire when they were younger and visit their favorite camping spot, preferably close to a lake. Once there, backpacking, hiking, fishing, skeet-shooting. and canoeing occupy the adventurer's time as the crisp Autumn air works its magic and relaxes the student until he must pull up his ten pegs and head back to a hot shower and a stack of books Many fall weekends are spent at one of the local discos, bars, or beer joints. When students tire of the standard fare of Courtney's, Darvo’s, and The Pub, many skirt over to Columbus to check out Reflections or The Chickasaw Lounge. The Artec, and the Inferno Club offer entertainment that will never be seen in Auburn ... at least not in public. ( 1 away football weekends, students who stay in Auburn may enjoy themselves by attending an Animal House” inspired toga party or by frequenting the local theatres to check out a new movie. However. Auburn's distinction of being a suitcase college” is most evident on these weekends, as carksads of students and dirty laundry dog the highways that lead out of the Loveliest Village on Friday afternoon. For the thrill seekers, fall weekends arc the perfect time for spelunking in one of Alabama’s or Georgia's caves, or parachuting onto Tuskee-gcc's Mot on Field. For the active but less adventurous type, hunting, motorcycle riding, racquctball and football satisfy the urge to break away from campus life a while. Basketball is the sport of the season during winter quarter, as Saturday and Monday nights arc reserved for War Eagle games. In addition to these games, students travel to Atlanta to watch the I lawk's battle the top pro teams. A new sport to this area of the country also draws students to Atlanta and Birmingham. Professional hockey has proven to be a crowd pleaser in the South, and many Auburn students arc avid fans. it vrbw to Go

An event falls in winter quarter that draws the attention of many Auburnucs. Mobile and New Orleans both celebrate Mardi Ciras and many students travel down to 10m in the festivities, parades and balls. Hie chill of winter gives way to the newness of Spring and Auburn's students celebrate the coming of the new season with outdoor activities. Pie most popular place to get away from it all during tlie Spring is Florida's sunny beaches. Skin-diving is the climax of a Florida weekend for some hearty souls, but most students are content to soak up the sun's rays and dip in the gulf waters. Although Florida weekends usually result in sunburned skin, empty bank accounts, and a carload of sand, those weekends remain the epitome of a weekend trip during the spring. Closer to home, water sports arc the favorite pastime for most, students as Lake Martin and water skiing join to form an irresistible combination. Fishing and swimming also entice many students to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding lakes and rivers in the Spring. Auburn is lucky to have two very beautiful places close by where students can relax in beautiful surroundings. Chcwacla State Park ami Calloway Gardens in Pirn- Mountain. Ga. offer serene settings for picnickers and lovers — both nature and otherwise. No spring is complete, however, without Auburn students viewing a baseball game from the left field bank Although not as professional as the games that some students travel to Atlanta to sec. the emotion of the games make them more enjoyable than any Brave’s game. After the game, the only place for the student to go is home to a Hibachi and another rite of Spring, cooking out. Getting away from it all. Every student gets away in his or her own fashion. Whether they simply go to sleep, get drunk, or leave town for one reason or another, getting away makes Auburn more tolerable and adds a dimension of education to the student that lie can’t find in the classroom. — Horis Cook 1 Wlvrrf . .ofxl.nd
