L Pages 12 through 111 capture the essence of Student Life at Aubum. How does the student body react to football games? What's it feel like to roll Toomer's Corner after a victory? Student Life shows how Auburn folks dress, cat and live. It reveals some of the pranks and various tricks students play when all is quiet and no one is watching. Srudent Life allows an in-depth look at popular Aubum personalities. Governor Fob James, Dean Catharine Cater and Mr Football himself, David Housel, are all featured in new and different views. How do Aubum students manage their money and how do they deal with rising costs? What's it like to be married and in school? Student Life recalls the normal aspects of day-to-day living on campus, as well. For instance, what's it like to ride on a Haley Center elevator? And, how do Auburn students work to battle the bulge and stay in shape? How do students make it to class? Student Life portrays ever-enduring traditions such as trips to Sani-Flush for ice creme sundaes. The Strike and the snow storm are occurances likely to be remembered by students today, so Student Life includes photos and commentary of both. In addition, Aubum pays tribute to its scores of beautiful women in the following pages. Whether it's the Homecoming Queen or Miss Glomerata finalists, many coeds take part in annual beauty pageants on campus Student Life is a celebration of all that is ours at Aubum. 'Vrudy liARd ANd 5Ay no U’s been said that my philosophy of campus life is 'Study hard and say no'. Katherine Cater said with a coy grin. And 1 suppose it is. as long as the students say no at the right time. Dean Cater was trying to capsulize her 33 years at Aubum as, first, dean of women from 1946. and now, due to the interference of Title IX. dean of student life. Her name is familiar to all Aubum students, and stories about her arc rehashed by parents, alumni and students. And yet few students seem to know anything at all about what the silver haired hostess of Social Center is like when she steps out from behind the desk. And there's so many stones to tell about Dean Cater it's hard to know where to licgin. and impossible to know where to end. Devotion and loyalty to family and friends are her hallmarks, a friend said. She always remembers friends' birthdays with a little something. She could have picked up her devotion from her family life in Macon, Ga According to friends, her parents were a very devoted couple, altlioqgh her fattier was Baptist, and her mother was Methodist. Each Sunday the family would drive downtown and park on the comer between the two churches. Dean Cater would go to the Baptist church with her father, and her brother would go to the Methodist church with her mother and meet at the car after service. At night Mrs. Cater would attend the Baptist church with her husband From Macon, Ga., Dean Cater attended limestone College, then went on to graduate school in Syracuse. N.Y. There she decided she wanted to continue working in the South, was offered and accepted her position here. Of course, as dean of women, her primary duties have revolved around female students, but You can't deal with the women without dealing with the men.” Dean Cater observed And. yes. she docs think women have changed in her years here at Auburn. To begin with, when she began the ratio of men to women was 1:5; now it's 1:1. Secondly, she said, aspirations have changed. Women used to consider Aubum a happy hunting ground, Dean Cater said. And there’s nothing wrong with that That’s fine as long as both of them graduate.” A friend of hers said that Dean Cater never stopped being a student herself when she graduated. She maintained her interest in the life of her mind, her friend said. She reads every thing she can. She especially likes The New Yorker and its cartoons. A sense of humor seems to be a must for Dean Catcr's position, and her infectious laugh testifies to her possession of one One of the funniest times Dean Cater can remember at Auburn was when Dorms V. VI. VII. VIII. and IX were opened in 19V The windows in the bathrooms were supposed to be thick glass that could be seen out of, but not in. Dean Cater got a call the night the dorms opened from someone who said you could see in the windows She and her assistant, Betty Cooper, went down to the quad, and took turns going into the buildings and lumping around in the bathrooms to sec if they could be seen outside. Sure enough, they could. Orders, went out for everyone to put towels in the windows, and the next day Venetian blinds were installed in every bathroom in those five buildings And that's the fastest job I’ve ever seen done at Auburn,” Dean Cater said, usually you have to wait months for something like that” In the meantime, the Associated Press picked up the story, and it was printed in hundreds of papers across the country. Time magazine even ran it Dean Cater said one of the jokes going abound then was that the reason the football tram was tloing so poorly was because they jogged by the dorms on the way home after practice, and they were too tired to do anything else. The most drastic changes Dean Cater has seen in her tenure here has been women being allowed to live off campus, the abolition of curfews, and the repealing of the dress code It was a real change when we stopped having the dress code, Dean Cater said. I would see a girl on the street and do a double take. Some of them go to such extremes. They don't exercise very good taste.” Another area of student taste she is mystified by is their music. She attended the Commodores concert last fall and said she enjoyed it. I have to confess that this loud music doesn't send me.” she said. Dean Cater has been a big Democrat all her life, one friend said She has been a strong supporter, especially in national elections. Through the years she has followed all the conventions with keen interest. Dean Cater's ties with die present Carter administration are a little closer than with past administrations An acquaintance of the president's mother since Miss Lillian’s days as KA bouse mother, Dean Cater met her again during campaigns. Dean Cater had gone with friends to Jimmy Carter's official presidential campaign kickoff in Warm Springs. Ga.. after his nomination Once there, they made their way to the ropes that marked the path that Cater would walk Well, in advance of the candidate. her friend remembered, along came Miss Lilian. She looked up and saw Dean Cater and there was a great reunion. After the kick-off, Dean Cater and friends were on the way back to Auburn, when they stopped off for breakfast By coincidence a private party was being given at rhe restaurant for Miss Lillian, and the host. without having any idea who any of the Auburn group was, invited them to join his party. In a few minutes, in came Miss Lillian.” her friend recalled. She saw Katherine and came rushing over and chatted a while. Then she asked Katherine to save her a seat at our table.” Dean Cater objected, saying Miss Lillian should be sitting with the host. Miss Lilian replied. Oh. no. I already told him I was going to sit with whoever I wanted to.” And she wanted to sit with Dean Cater, as. her friends insist, do many people Some friends who requested rise pleasure of her company and didn't get it were Jim and SallyJor.es Hill, the coowners of Seattle Slew Dean Cater had gotten to know Sally when she was president of the Women's Student Government Association The Hills invited Dean Cater to sit with them at the Kentucky Derby when Seattle Slew ran it. but she had to refuse because she was scheduled for surgery a few days before it. But Dean Cater arranged for a TV to be placed in her room, and she watched Slew win the first leg of his triple crown Shortly after his victory she received a dozen red roses The card attached said. Hope you will soon he up and running Love, Seattle Slew ” But Dean Cater doesn't plan to be running any where soon. Although she loves to travel (New York is her favorite vacation spot) she intends to stay put at Auburn for a while. Oh.
