in auburn university student body prior to becoming president ot auburn university, harry philpott had attended only one auburn tootball game at which he cheered for the other side. in addition to being anti-auburn, he was an ordained baptist minister, who always wanted to teach religion but never had a church. what emerges from the background ot this previously misguided man? none other than auburn's president who tinds his church in the university with a membership ot over l2,000 students. He not only inspires his most enthusiastic congregation at a wreck tech pep rally, but also feeds the freshman multitudes on his lawn each tall. with the expected increase ot his already large congre- gation to 20,000 by I975, president philpott sees the in- dividual sutdent as his main concern. therefore he plans to recruit and maintain the best possible taculty and reduce class size. this interest in the student comes naturally to the amiable president who says that he has learned to love auburn because the spirit ot the students is tound every- where and is unlike that anywhere else. friendly as the cry ot war eagle in tiger territory, president philpott exclaims at the mention ot his own warmth to students, i put on shoes just like everybody else. as vice-president of academic affairs, dr.-wiltord s. bailey works with an open-door policy tor students as head ot the instructional program. dr. ben lanham, vice-president in charge of research, envisions use of Sli million research budget. i , , .. l dr. fred robertson, vice-president ot extension, ponders plans 'For auburn university's tour-year college in montgomery. 25
