The School of Science and Literature strives to help one know the world in which he li»cs. understands himself a an individual in a democracy, and achieve a sense of sound Valin's. Liberal education is stressed. If road knowledge, insight, and wisdom are emphasized over restricted expert-ness and mastery. It is believed, however, that a broad culture and a specific competence are not necessarily inconsistent: one complements the other and helps the graduate live intelligently and serve effectively in an ever changing world while making a living. Four-year curricula lead toward careers as business men. mathematicians, linguists, historians, journalists, sociologists. physicists, accountants, statisticians, and secretaries, and pre-professional instruction is provided for pros| cctive lawyers, doctors, dentists, and veterinarians. Within the School of Science and Literature arc the departments of Business Administration. Sociology. Knglish, Foreign Languages. History. Mathematics. Physics. Secretarial Training and Speech. School of Pharmacy What's their sideline?? J| | IV W l KKK I’midtnl JOHN CAKNKK I ift-l'tfudenl n- green | l In May. 1956. the 1,000th graduate received his diploma from the School of Pharmacy. I.ike all graduates of this school, his training based on the fundamental sciences of chemistry, physics and biology has prepared him to practice pharmacy in the retail drug field and such allied fields as wholesale pharmacy, hospital pharmacy or manufacturing pharmacy. Auburn facilities for teaching pharmacy are unexcelled in this section id the country. Miller Mall, the home of the School of Pharmacy , was erected at a cost of $350,000 and is devoted exclusively for teaching pharmacy. Staff members are men of wide experience and high technical training in their respective fields. The equipment is modern and complete in every detail. The graduate program is now well established. Several scholarships in the graduate field are available. Studies looking toward the extension of the four year curriculum to five years are under way. This projmsed change will become effective with the freshman class of 1960.

Tick The School of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1907 and the lir l class was graduated in 1909. There were five members of this class, all residents of Alabama. In dale, a total of 1.139 have been awarded degrees. For many wars the School of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn was the only accredited Veterinary College in the South. In order to secure additional funds for operation, a Regional Program was inaugurated in 1949. I nder this program admissions are restricted to a definite quota of students from the states of Florida. Mississippi. Tennessee, and Kentucky. Two wars of pre-veterinary work required before applicants are eligible for admission to the School of Veterinary Medicine. After being admitted to the professional school, four calendar years are required to complete re-quireincnts for a degree. Ml Seniors are required to intern with an approved practitioner during their last quarter in school before graduation. The School of Veterinary Medicine occupies approximately thirtv acres and consists of an nimal Disease Research I nit. Animal Disease Diagnostic laboratory and. in addition. three major buildings and a hospital barn.
