Taken more liberally, however, Alabama Polytechnic Institute implies a vast system of instruction, research, and ex- tension teaching. President Draughon's chief assistant is Dr. David W. Mullins, Executive Vice-President of Auburn. The Executive Vice-President, who was appointed by the President, is the ranking administrative ofiicer of all divsions of the institution and relieves.the President of many of the details of his administrative duties. The distribution of responsibility on the level below Dr. Draughon and Dr. Mullins is vested in the three distinctly separate departments of instruction, research, and ex- DAVID W. MULLINS MICHEL C. It is through these branches that Auburn serves the people of Alabama and the entire South in a manner that is equaled by few other institutions. Dr. Michel C. Huntley, Dean of the Faculty and chairman of the Council of Deans and of the Curriculum Committee, directs the branch of the Alabama Polytechnic that is devoted to instruction. Dr. Huntley has been honored by selection to Who's Who in America. Dean E. V. Smith, Dean of the School of Agriculture, is the director of Auburn's extensive research division. This branch of the School is devoted to finding solutions to many of the problems confronting the present generation. Perhaps the most far reaching of Auburn's three branches is that of the extension 18

Goa Gordon Pemom Gordon Persons, Governor of Alabama and Chairman of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute Board ol Trustees, has the interests of Auburn at heart. He is an Auburn graduate whose sound ideas of business and politics carried him to the highest olhce in the state. Governor Pe1'son's relations with his Alma Mater have been sound. He approved a large building program fund soon after his inauguration which was a large step Forward for the expansion of the Auburn physical plant. The Board of Trustees which has the controlling hand of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute and holds the Hnal authority on all major policies of the school, is composed of a representative, appointed by the governor, from each ol the congressional districts and the State Superintendent of Education. The actions of the present Board provide clear indications of sincere interest in the continued growth and development of Auburn as a well balanced institute of higher education. Davis, decisions made by this division are felt by virtually every citizen of Alabama, Research discoveries are distributed to farmers throughout the state by means of the county agent and home demonstration system. Mr. Davis was recently elected President of the Southeastern Resources Development Association and also the Southern Agricultural Workers As- sociation. The members of the administration of Alabama Polytechnic Institute perform un- heralded taslcs that are nevertheless essential to the smooth operation of the institution. Keeping the great mass of records in the registrz-1r's ofiice, sweating with the financial problems of the school, or supervising the maintenance of Auburn's physical plant, are examples of the duties of the administration personnel.
