Goa Gordon Pemom Gordon Persons, Governor of Alabama and Chairman of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute Board ol Trustees, has the interests of Auburn at heart. He is an Auburn graduate whose sound ideas of business and politics carried him to the highest olhce in the state. Governor Pe1'son's relations with his Alma Mater have been sound. He approved a large building program fund soon after his inauguration which was a large step Forward for the expansion of the Auburn physical plant. The Board of Trustees which has the controlling hand of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute and holds the Hnal authority on all major policies of the school, is composed of a representative, appointed by the governor, from each ol the congressional districts and the State Superintendent of Education. The actions of the present Board provide clear indications of sincere interest in the continued growth and development of Auburn as a well balanced institute of higher education. Draughon is a living example of the traditional American success story. In 1918 he enrolled at Auburn as a freshmang served as an assistant professor of history and political science from 1937 to 1944 and executive secretary and secretary to the Board of Trustees from 1944 to 19473 following the death of Dr. Duncan, served as director of instruction and acting president from August 1947 to October 1948g and in 1948 Dr. Draughon was installed as president of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. During his period of service as Auburn's chief executive, Dr. Draughon has been faced with many grave problems which he solved in a capable manner. Dr. Draughon's major object has been the balanced growth and development of all phases of the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. All branches and departments have been given equal consideration and none have been treated with favoritism. Truly Dr. Draughon, in a quiet and efficient manner, is providing the leadership for a Greater Auburn.

' , 5- . ...,, . V, E. L, ,I J. The term Alabama Polytechnic Institute legally denotes the relatively small body of a dozen men that comprise the Board of Trustees. Taken more liberally, however, Alabama Polytechnic Institute implies a vast system of instruction, research, and ex- tension teaching. President Draughon's chief assistant is Dr. David W. Mullins, Executive Vice-President of Auburn. The Executive Vice-President, who was appointed by the President, is the ranking administrative ofiicer of all divsions of the institution and relieves.the President of many of the details of his administrative duties. The distribution of responsibility on the level below Dr. Draughon and Dr. Mullins is vested in the three distinctly separate departments of instruction, research, and ex- DAVID W. MULLINS MICHEL C. It is through these branches that Auburn serves the people of Alabama and the entire South in a manner that is equaled by few other institutions. Dr. Michel C. Huntley, Dean of the Faculty and chairman of the Council of Deans and of the Curriculum Committee, directs the branch of the Alabama Polytechnic that is devoted to instruction. Dr. Huntley has been honored by selection to Who's Who in America. Dean E. V. Smith, Dean of the School of Agriculture, is the director of Auburn's extensive research division. This branch of the School is devoted to finding solutions to many of the problems confronting the present generation. Perhaps the most far reaching of Auburn's three branches is that of the extension 18
