PROGRESS IN THE MAKING Wifh ifs 2,085 acres of campus crowded fo almosf every corner by fhe record enrollmenf of fhe posf-war period, building fook a spurf which far surpassed fhe I938-39 era of expansion. Albeif much of fhe work in fhe l945-48 period was of a femporary nafure hasfily erecfed fo alleviafe fhe swellen enrollmenf, fhe campus gained many needed and necessary buildings which will survive fhe boom following fhe war. Highlighfs in 'Ihis march of progress were climaxed wifh fhe consfrucfion of permanenf sfrucfures such as fhe Wilmore Engineering Laborafory, fhe new Men's Dormifory, and fhe Agriculfural Engineering Annex. The Wilmore Engineering Laborafory, fo be complefed in July of I949, will greafly increase fhe facilifies of fhe Engineering School wifh 34 laborafories, 5 laborafory work shops, 26 offices, 3 lecfure rooms, and I8 rooms for sforage, dark rooms, and blueprinfing. This modern building, which is connecfed wifh Ramsey Hall, was named for fhe lafe John Jenkins Wilmore, pasf Dean of fhe School of Engineering. Consfrucfed of reinforced concrefe and masonry, 'Ihe Wilmore Engineering Laborafory cosf approximafely S957,98O. Providing living guarfers for 43I male sfudenfs, fhe new Men's Dormifory was opened for Ihe firsf fime af fhe beginning of fhe Fall quarfer of I948. Complele wifh a 500 capacify cafeferia and 6 guesf rooms, fhe new dormifory is consfrucfed in eighf fireproof secfions and is modern fhroughouf. The cosf of fhe building was SI,OO0,000 and if is consfrucfed of hollow file wifh brick facing. Feafuring sfrucfural glass and aluminum doors af fhe fronf enfrance, fhe building is designed for 'rhe comforf of fhe sfudenfs. An addifion fc fhe Hare Sfadium, recenfly named for fhe lafe C. L. Hare, Dean of Ihe School of Chemisfry, will consisf of a I3,000 seaf concrefe sfrucfure bordering The easf side of fhe afhlefic field. This new secfion, which will reach fwice as high as fhe wesfern sfands, will cosf approximafely S455,366p and when complefed 'rhe sladium will accornodafe 2I,OOO cheering fans. Complefion dafe has been sef af Augusf 30, I949: A fund consisfing of SI49,362 was made available for improve- menf and consfrucfion of fhe API owned Auburn-Opelika Airporf. Work was begun in February on fhe new adminisfrafion building, concrefe runways, relocalion of fhe hangar, fencing, draining, curbs, and guffers. The adminisfrafion building, consfrucfed of masonry. will confain a lounge, operafions room, classrooms, and a pilof's and dispafcher's room. One of ifs chief uses will be as a fraining ground for aeronaufical engineering sfudenfs. The lalesf developmenf on Ag Hill is 'Ihe consfrucfion of fhe Agriculfural Engineering Annex, wesf of fhe Agriculfural Engineer- ing Building. This building provides a greaf boosf for ifs deparf- menf wifh farm fracfor, farm machinery, gas engines, machinery repairing service, dairy engineering. and rural elecfrificafion labora- Iories which will be ready for use upon complefion of fhe building fhis Summer. Offices will also be housed in fhe reinforced con- crefe sfrucfure. For fhe convenience of sfudenfs and faculfy, an 86 car parking lof has been consfrucfed soufh of 'Ihe building. Since I945, when fhe Sfafe Legislafure appropriafed funds 'I'o esfablish a deparfmenf of foresfry and fo expand fhe foresfry research program af Auburn, fhe growfh of fhe new school has been more fhan rapid. Where only fwo years ago fhere was an open park, foday sfands one of fhe finesf foresfry school buildings in fhe Unifed Sfafes. The S22I,732 building was designed solely for foresfry feaching and research work. Eguipmenf and facilifies cover well fhe 'fields of woodworking machinery, wood preservafion, fimber mechanics, wood chemisfry, lumber drying, wood fechnology, silvlculfure, denclrology, mensurafion, foresfry managemenf, phofo- grammefry, foresfry soils, and free physiology.
